Although I do agree with your points.
Yeah F2P might help it's popularity but there's just no money-making content available for micro-transaction business model.
I think this only might be a great gift of appreciation from the devs (to make it F2P) since after this step there won't be any income for them from this title (except for our gratitude and loyality for their incomming interwave titles).
In spite of this the game provides new gameplay that is not present in any other game. It's fun.
To my mind the best thing devs could do is to create an ND2 with new gameplay changes. Test new things in closed beta testing and make the game even more fun. So players can enjoy the game from the first minutes of playing.
Free Games are just downloaded as demos just for testing and checking if it's any fun. This way many many players will try it out and some of them will stick to it.
PS: I hope for an ND2 as well. This could be so fun but I have my doubts about the engine. I like the source aim-precision but its dated ... a newer engine might have some "improvements" like in battlefield where you have to shoot in advance and aim higher at a greater range ... i don't like it this way at all ... It's hard enough to aim ... they shall consider it as a game not as a pure reality.
The game's concept is great but was pretty poorly executed in terms of balance... aka no balance system, it's greatest flaw.
Source is a bad engine for complicated multiplayer games... and it's map size is very limited.
Perhaps take the unlimited trial approach, players stuck at LV 1 until they pay to unlock.
There is a lot of things to learn. But this is what makes it so good, the depth is what makes the game great for me.
However this does lead to its biggest flaw, team balance. The community by n large is a very grown up one that wants to have fair balanced games however there are people that just want to win and will stack teams which, in my opinion, ruins it. I dont like winning if there is no fight, its like cheating.
Or is this just me?
There are pretty simple changes... and I have no clue why the devs didn't do this from the start.
Perks sould allow you to change your balance, more than make you flat out more powerful with no drawbacks.
I like the lvl1 thing for free-to-play and pay to unlock.
Also I like the thought that levels shall be hidden at start and players shuffled randomly or balanced out.
Unfortunatelly the devs won't update the game (anytime soon) because they are fulltime working on their next project.
About the levels: Yeah there is a great difference between lvl80 and lvl20ies... but it's experience only - not the perks you get -> and this way I like it the most.
If there were the F2P model as stated above no one actually could be right in saying that it is pay to win. Actually the only thing that matters in this game is teamwork and experience and nothing else. I love it.
