I'd rather have Black Mesa have Xen before it's supported for Synergy

Same but atleast we could play a few levels and then update it again when they add Xen

plus Synergy is mainly for the HL2 Campaigns and the team behind Black Mesa built their game from the ground up so there's no telling what type of Engine they used sure if could be Source but what version as it has more features and stuff over the HL2 Games

I really hope some people can do a Sven Co-op/Synergy sort of mod for Black Mesa.

After they add Xen and properly fix the game.

I heard that Black Mesa used a modified TF2 Source Engine, with a few bits and pieces of others.

There is absolutely no way to get Black Mesa to fully support Synergy at this point. The Black Mesa developers use a custom Source Engine base for the game, it's impossible for Synergy to apply these changes. The only potential we have is using the original mod.

If Synergy ever supports Black Mesa, it will indeed be when Black Mesa is finished and polished (e.g. Xen). Synergy and BM share the same base engine but BM had made some incompatible changes, but most of which I believe can be worked around. I suggest not holding your breath for BM support anytime soon. However if you still want to play around with it, the 2012 mod version of Black Mesa is... "playable" in the sense that it doesn't crash Synergy; but there is no code support so no custom entities will spawn.

If you have the mod version installed you can type "map_background bms background01" to enjoy a sexy background map, but that's about it. I plan on adding full Half-Life: Source support this year (if I'm lucky), so at least you'll have something in the meantime. :)

Disclaimer: I am one of Black Mesa's programmers.

Ranking Synergy support it goes kinda like this:

1. HL2 + Episodes
2. Minerva: Metastasis
3. Custom Content/Stock Maps
4. Other mounted content: rock24/dangerous world/city17/etc
5. New 3rd party mod

And this is caused by Rebel Rushes only really covering HL2-EP2, somtimes they hit Minerva, and I've managed to request along with find cvars to aid in custom maps like mp_reset, sm_cvar sv_airaccelerate, etc.

Sounds like Synergy may go abit more open source though, and with full workshop support planned in the future 3rd party mod support will be much greater so it's possible Black Mesa may come sooner rather then later if a community member decides to do it and share.
if synergy doesnt support it, then the black mesa devs really need to add co-op like they originally planned to. The multiplayer for that game is empty and its already included in so many other games.

+ 9001 for BM:S support.
