Every time my mate tries to launch synergy, it opens up and it tries to load the menu but it goes to black and it gets to that error message. Tried reinstalling half life 2 and synergy and verifying caches. Not sure what to do. Hes running on windows 10, half life 2 runs perfectly.

Your friend needs to post the info about what exactly he has done to try to correct it.
It sounds like they are not doing something correctly in the attempt to fix.
The amount of data it is has 'failed to read' is pretty much the entire install.
