Though I've logged only 4 hours on this game, I am quite familiar with Red Alert 2 and other RTS games. Simply, EA has destroyed what was once a great franchise. The units themselves are woefully balanced with some units being destroyed instantly. The difficulty of the game is quite frustrating considering that the game itself is poorly scripted, as there are multiple bugs. I've had problems with units failing to complete their movement due to poor pathing. Some units will just stop if their path is momentarily blocked. Siege units are insanely powerful while infantry and many other units are simply irrelevant. It seems that the Soviets in particular lack any sort of meaningful anti air units as the Bullfrogs and MiGs have light armor values and can be decimated by units of other regions. Flak troopers may be cheap but without any ability to traverse water, there is essentially no sufficient anti air. The Scorpion unit of RA2 was completely removed, which were some of the best anti air units that the Soviets had at their disposal.
In addition, the campaign missions seem to be poorly designed. Just recently I played a mission in which the Soviet player had to assassinate the Emperor of the Rising Sun with a single Conscript. It seemed as illogical that there were areial units flying that failed to notice the enemy Conscript. As the mission continued, my base was assaulted by a wave of enemy tanks before any sort of player could mount a resistance force. The missions are boring and uninteresting. The acting and writing is subpar. The unit AI seems almost idiotic and inconsistent with some units agressively pursuing enemy units while other times standing their ground and just letting themselves be defeated.
In sum, I was wholeheartedly dissapoointed at this game. EA has (unsurprisingly) ruined another franchise. Just play RE2, which I still do. It may be older but at least it was well made in comparision to RE3, a ♥♥♥♥ game.
