Command & Conquer™ Red Alert™ 3

Command & Conquer™ Red Alert™ 3

Warning: does not start in Win7
my system is doing just fine with any modern game. Most games that are older than my gfx card also run without problems. This crap though shows me the startup window, which then minimizes and rests forever on my task bar until I kill it with the manager.
Some helpful comrades here gave me tips as to tweak my system in order to make RA3 work, but I refuse to tweak a stable and reliable setup.
What Steam needs is a quality control label in order to inform customers about not supported / undead software.
Or a "Steam Approved" label, which signals QA for ancient titles.

Strange... It did start here.
try running it in compatibility mode (Windows Vista or XP) if you havn't already.
Starts fine for me in both Windows 7 and Windows 8 with no tweaking required.

playing on Windows 7 on normal PC (high end settings) and on Macbook 13" (Windows 7, using bootcamp) with low end settings. No problems (if not pay attention to fps on macbook) :happymeat:

Works fine for me on Windows 7. Are you sure this isn't related to your drivers or something?
You're ridiculous for immediately assuming that the problem is for all Windows 7 users. Like the others are saying, the majority run it just fine.

I'm sorry that you're having these issues, and you're ridiculous for not wanting to even try to fix this issue. Every system runs into issues with some games now and then - that's just how PC gaming is. You must be new if you don't know that.

Thanks for your comments. Tried the compatibility mode, with that I do not even get the launch window anymore.
Drivers all up to date, as I said, any and all new games and almost every old game run perfectly well.
If my thread title insulted some Win7 users, please accept my apology.
@Vigil: I have been playing digital games ever since Pong was released.
I messed around with games on DOS and may have gotten lazy in the last couple of years.
Thx for not posting anything relevant. Please stay out of my light in the future.
The fact that you've been playing for so long just shows how embarrassing your post is, claiming that the issue is something that affects all Windows 7 users as your first response. You have even less of an excuse to be so ignorant, if what you claim is true.
started fine in windows 8, then i set the resolution to 1920x1080 and it crashed and will not start again
The reason I worded the title of this thread as I did is that I expect software like this to work as soon as the download is finished. When I experience that 99% of games I buy at least start and run until the intro movie, be they from big publishers, be they from indie devs, but this one does not, I feel I have the right to complain about it.
Baldurs Gate, FTL, Legend of Grimrock, Arma 3, Witcher 2, X3AP etc - my Steam library offers some variety. Big, small, old or new games start and play. Shadowrun Returns had its problems at release, but it started...EA C&C RA3 title from 2008 does not? Needs system tweaking? Not acceptable. My opinion folks and I shall not explain it any more to vigilists :)

Having to tweak a game here and there to get it to work is a fact of PC gaming life. It always has been this way, and I flatly don't believe that you don't understand this if you've been playing as long as you claim. The occasional game will just not work out of the box.

That doesn't mean that the game is broken for all people using that operating system.

Your claim is right there in case you don't remember what you've been saying.
LOL. Now you have my attention. Just what is your agenda? Are you on the lookout, do you get paid for this? Do you want my adress and birthplace, in order to see if my background checks out alright?
It is not about tweaking the game dude. Maybe you should play more and bother less about defending a software which seems sloppily coded or badly supported.

Edit: if this was not an internet forum but a pub I might even be scared. My claim? Is right there...yes. Quality for customers, like me and you. Maybe if this was a pub you would not have called me ridiculous, who knows. Over a beer or two you might even listen and consider my opinion. Let us be good and call this off, please?

You throw your voice out in a public place and expect people to not criticize it? To point out fundamental flaws?

It's people like you that give PC gaming a bad rap. You act like a few modifications and tweaks is an arcane incantation that a lord such as yourself shouldn't have to stoop to on his glowing box of perfection.

Your ultimate response is a long winded version of "fight me irl". Your post is flatly wrong - the game does work on Windows 7. It's akin to a spoiled journal entry moaning about having to tighten a few screws.

I have many, many problems with EA and with poor software in general. But what I have more of a problem with is people making out their own personal software issues to be something huge when it's their stubborness that's the mountain.
lol.... Looks like you guys are having fun here ;oP

Not sure if you can help me but thought I'd ask since many of you have run this in Win7. I'm dying to play this game but I keep getting the DirectX Error on start up of the game.

"please make sure you have DirectX9.0 or higher installed. Also verify that your video card meets the min requirements, and that you do not have hardware acceleration disabled in the Display control panel."

So far I've been able to run all my Steam games with with no problem except this one. I have DirectX11 & all drivers are up to date. I've tried a few updates or tweeks suggested in another chat but still no luck....

Any ideas guys?

Thanks so much, I really appreciate any suggestions. :oD

MinXy, have you tried various compatibility modes? That usually solves problems like that. If you manage to eliminate the DX error but are still getting a black screen, check out Options.ini and tweak the settings there and see if you can get it working. Hope this helps.
