Ok so almost everyone you encounter after you arrive is either already dead or die seconds after coming into contact with them with Mercer and Kyne being the exceptions. So what i dont understand is how did he manage to while unarmed move around the ship so freely and be able to evade the necromorphs for so long?

he probably made somekind of a deal with the Hive Mind telepathically perhaps

No. It's just poor game design. Most games does this. If you look past it it's alright.
