If you're so scared as to not be able to play them, maybe you should avoid the horror genre?
DeadSpace does some jump at you gotcha scary things, but the sound of an unseen monster chuckling creeps me out more too. Gets me looking in front and behind and again and peeking around corners with weapon aimed.
Finished a 'normal' mode playthru and now I'm playing thru on impossible. I thought that might be kind of like ranger-hardcore on metro2033, but it's not like that: 'rangermode' was mostly about extreme scarcity of air/ammo/meds, 'impossible' mode is more about enemies being tougher to kill and the player taking very high damage when hit. There is greater scarcity too, but the more noticeable difference is how much tougher the enemies are compared to you. I'm getting better at using the explosive tanks lying around because when you do it right, it's an instakill on common enemies.
not to mention, whenever i'm in a current chapter and about to proceed to the next, I always backtrack throughout the area and gather as much ammo and supplies as possible and put them in the Store. even if it means taking several trips to do this task
when I first played this game, the moment that damn near made me ♥♥♥♥ my pants is that one elevator in Chapter-4. Where after you're going down to complete one of Hammond's tasks, all is silent at first and then out of nowhere, a very convincing (and extremely loud) woman's scream can be heard.
that one moment has to be the scariest in the entire game, with maybe those tentacles that come out of nowhere and grab you.
Maybe some of them are younger than your average 20 something gamer. When I was in middle school, I refused to play Halo CE's second half for a few months because the flood terrified me.
