This is my favorite series of all time as far as RPG's go and almost one of my favorite period.
However, it is a little dated looking now, so.. here is something to help with that.

Check out that site, it will have you up and running with far improved shaders and graphics.
In order to get the end DLC PS you will need to register your key with Origin. I hear rumor that it's automatically included with the game now and no longer a need to get the trillogy. I can't confirm this though. as I always move my back up file that contains the DLC I got wayyy back before EA nuked every available link for it... So I import my back up copy.
You wont miss anything without the PS DLC as it's a very short run, and doesn't transfer anything to the next game. Bringing Down The Sky however is fantastic and I highly recomend it. Make sure to launch the game once before trying to install it.
I have far more hours in this game than STEAM reports, as I had been playing it long before they started keeping track, and now play it through Origin since steam doesn't get updates for the series to keep them working with PhysX. (Political battle with EA I'm sure...) I'm sure there are ways to make it work with steam but I guess the launcher for the game isn't that big of a deal. I just launch Origin as a non steam game to keep the overlay.
Read this, it might save you a lot of problem solving and head scratchinghttp://www.reddit.com/r/masseffect/comments/2uxq1r/problem_installing_meuitm_for_me1/

Mass Effect is a sci fi RPG set in the future. You travel between galexies trying to save the univers from a massive threat.
The choices you make matter. People will live or die because of them, some choices you wont even see the results from until you are playing the second or third game. You truely shape your own story and it's fantastic in every way.
The game play mechanics are a bit dated, as are the graphics but the mod listed above should help with the later. While the game play mechanics are dated, they aren't lacking in fun. They aren't tedius, they just aren't stream lined. ME2 has a change in this, and 3 alters game play even further. In this installment you have a inventory and can buy different weapons, armor, ammo types, and get some resonable depth with the leveling system. The next installments simplify this and you lose a lot of that old style mechanic. (I like the armor system and weapon system a lot in the first game but the ways to improve in the second game are good as well, just different.) You work as a squad, and command each member. That beind said they do have AI and work on their own as well. You can choose to let them use their powers by themselves or, to have complete control of what they use and when they use it by issuing commands.
You get to explore planets, there might be random people trying to fight out for their lives, giant creatures waiting to kill you, or little monkeys stealing tech you really want to get your hands on. There is so much I would like to say, but won't at risk of spoiling the adventure for you. Get out there, suit up, and have some fun.
If you are going to play any of these games, I highly suggest starting with this one and playing all the way through. If you don't, there are things you will miss. Big things, and little things that make the series shine so bright.
I'm commander Lex Lagger, and this is my favorite game on steam. (You'll get the joke once you get to ME2)
