Mirror's Edge

Mirror's Edge

Turn physX off, rename esoteric files, frame rate STILL low. Is this game intentionally crippled?
I'm running a fairly new computer. 16 gigs of RAM, fancy graphics card, the works. I can play skyrim with full settings and 50 mods and still get a lovely framerate.

Why can't I play Mirror's Edge?

I've turned PhysX off, I've renamed the relevant .dll files (as many have suggested), but I still don't get nearly the sort of frame rate that my computer is capable of. I should be able to run this game at full blast and get well over 60 fps.

Is this game intentionally crippled to only run and nvidea gear, and if so, can I get a refund?

I guess, I would ammend by adding my unspoken question: Is there any way to run this game at max settings and still maintain a decent fps count? Has anyone uncovered a way to optimize this?
I have the same problem, but only at the end of levels, I have a Nvidia graphics card as well, so it can't be that.
This only happens when glass is shot for me
So maybe if you turn off hostiles in the options menu it would fix your framerate, because glass couldn't be shot.
It's most likely the physics engine. I can run max settings at 60+ fps without the physics, with it, I occasionaly drop to about 5 from a steady 20ish. That physics engine runs really hard, it's prolly your processor. I have 3.6 GHz.
How do you turn off the physics engine? It's not the physX option, is it? Because that's still not getting me up to that magical 60 fps.
The particle effects will crush your graphics card in "Flight" on high, I think. Probably on pretty much any resolution as well, because of the way it's done. Try dropping the world detail to medium?
I'm confused; I've been running this game on max(ish) since the days when I had a GTX 260...
Then I had two, which obviously ran better.
Then an HD 6970 which certainly didn't break a sweat and I even toyed with hybrid physX (HD 6970 + GTX 260) which still ran perfectly.

So no, it's not gimped on AMD hardware (except PhysX of course) and there's no reason why you shouldn't be able to max it out... Unless maybe you're one of those crazies who need to run 8xAA at 2560x1440?
And as for your additional question, I've never felt like it needed optimization... I mean, it's UE3! Does Mass Effect 2 run poorly for you? Arkham Asylum? Borderlands? R6 Vegas 2? All UE3 games from around the same time (2009)...

P.S: The way you've written your computer specs makes them damn near useless; What's your actual CPU and GPU model? Is it a laptop? What version of Windows? At what resolution are you running?
