Spore Launch errors (2000) and (1004) on Win 7 64 bit
I have reinstalled the game and verified the files multiple times to no avai and I keep getting the messages
- Configuration Script Failed [2000]
- Could not find a needed package. The data directory is missing or corrupt. [1004]
I've checked multiple forums and the fixes are for the game is installed and run on the computer, not through a program like Steam. Please help

The way i got it to work is i removed the directory

Did nothing.

I checked the Spore forums, because I too were having the exact same errors and this is what I found.
It is due to 64 bit Window 7 registry deleting the SPORE entries automatically after each installation and patching.

HOW TO FIX SPORE for 64 bit Windows 7
1. Open C:\Windows\regedit as administrator

2. Find
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432node\Electronic Arts\SPORE

3. Add the following as string value if they are not there
AppDir = SPORE
DataDir = C:\Program Files (x86)\Electronic Arts\SPORE\Data\
InstallLoc = C:\Program Files (x86)\Electronic Arts\SPORE
PlayerDir = My Spore Creations

4. Add the following as 32bit DWORD value
ReIndexYesOrNo = 0
InstallCompleted = 1

5. Open Spore and have fun

Note: change the blue text to your installation directory, the one shown is the default directory

>blue text was the c:\ files next to DataDir and InstallLoc
I tried looking for the exact place but I couldn't find the files to change.

Maybe you will have more luck

The above procedure worked for me, I just changed:

AppDir = Spore
DataDir = D:\Games\Steam\SteamApps\common\Spore\Data\
InstallLoc = D:\Games\Steam\SteamApps\common\Spore

Because that is where I installed my steam and apps; hope this works for you!

Thanks, but I tried looking for C:\Users\(USERNAME)\AppData\Roaming\Spore but I didn't have the AppData in there.

GL, I'm really glad for your sucess, but not sure if you know but that was a fix I posted earlier because I dont have a spore folder in my Electronic Arts through regedit

Also tried reinstalling it last night again but trying to add shortcut buttons and none came up. When manually trying to add on through the Library, it says that it can't add one because there already is one on my desktop.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432node\Electronic Arts\SPORE

this does not exist in the registry. and ive done everything with the roaming file and it still didnt do a thing.

2. Find
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432node\Electronic Arts\SPORE

does not exist in my registry either.

ok, i figured out a way to bypass steam, if you right click on spore in your steam library there will be a cd key (the product key) it should be 5 sets of 4 character separated by hyphens. Ok write that code down and then go to ea games and download origin and create an account with them if you don't already have one. Then go to ea.com and go to their customer support. You will have to look at a couple FAQs before you can talk to an actual advisor, but the advisor for ea games will redeem your code for you online through origin. You will have to play the game through origin, but hey, at least you can play it.

I had this (1004) error too, but discovered another way to get around it.

First, go to the directory of Spore and delete both exe's (within SporeBin & SporebinEP1) - Then have steam re-download them (Right click on game in steams library / properties / local files - Verify Integrity of Game Cache) Unfortunately you'll have do this for both individually.

Then I loaded the games and they both worked. Note however, that I loaded Galactic Adventures first and signed in. Then I Quit and started Spore after and it also loaded without error, but I think both should work fine whichever is started first.

None of these methods have worked for me, whenever I attempt at playing Spore it says "Could not find a needed package. The data directory is missing or corrupt. [1004]" I would much prefer to not have to play it on Origin but, if it's my only option then I'll consider.

Hey guys, I was frustrated for over and hour that the Windows 7 64 bit fix above wasn't working for me. But i painstakingly went back and checked and rechecked that I typed everything in correctly. It turned out I had a character or two that wasn't right. I made the corrections and now it's working! Finally!

i found some values are missing for me , anyway i add those value Datadir , installloc and those 32 bit values

i found the problem is maybe the directory value are wrong and its non steam game directory , those needs to change manualy and the game will run fine as you mentioned at last step

thanks , and EA needs to fix this
computerchy Aug 15, 2013 @ 12:38pm
GUYS CHANGE THE DIRECTORY PATH ON REG VALUES THEY ARE ENTERED FOR NON STEAM VERSION , JUST COPY THE STEAM GAME PATH AND CHANGE THE WRONG PATH THAT WAS TYPED ON REGEDIT VALUES , AND ADD THE MISSING VALUES AS WHAT ( GL DONT CARE ) MENTIONED AND IT WILL WORK

to get the game path , on games list in steam program , r click on spore game - l click on settings - brows local files then copy the path that shown on the top address bar ( or whatever its name )

anyway the default game path for win 64 bit is :
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Spore\
