I think that when Crytek said that they wanted this game to be "Hardware Future-proof", they meant it! Because this is a rare case of an older game that's aged so well graphically, that it actually looks better than it did when it came out!
Let me explain. Remember the old "Can it run Crysis" meme? Back when this game was first released in 2007, very few PC's could handle the "High" settings of this game at resolutions higher than 1024x768 and maintain a playable framerate, and even fewer of them could handle the "Very High" settings at framerates higher than slideshow speed at any resolution! (The fact that at the time, the "Very High" settings were only available to users of Vista, which already had trouble running on most PC's to begin with, really didn't help...)
Times have definitely changed. It's now very common for gaming PC's to have a lot more than 2GB of RAM (the "official" recommended amount for this game), and to say that Graphics Card and CPU performance has improved since 2007 would be an understatement. So, now that we have access to much better hardware, we can now see all the little details that Crytek stuffed into this game and still maintain a playable framerate!
