No side missions or roaming - you get a mission and must accomplish it to progress.
There are secondary objectives, however, which you can count as side quests, but they're optional. Like in the first map Contact you can disable the radio jamming machine and then head straight into the mountains to meet up with your comrades, or you can do the secondary objective to gather intel on General Kyong (or whatever his name is).
The other map I can think of called Ascension when your flying the VTOL you have a few secondary objectives in which you can defend a few stations in aerial combat or you can just fly straight to the harbor.
