Crysis
Crysis 1 Windows 7/ Windows 10 x64 Crash problem (Master Troubleshooting Thread)
Alright, it seems this Crysis crash problem has been going on for quite some time. The biggest issue is that while it seems the symptoms are similar (black screen at launch then crash to desktop) the fixes that have worked for some people varies greatly. I think this implies that the causes of this problem can be different and some may even suffer from a combination of them.

I've therefore decided to start this thread to see if we can pinpoint the various causes for this problem. Below I've listed the various solutions I've compiled from both here and other forums across the web that have purportedly worked for some. The idea here is that everyone with this problem try every possible solution on this list and report back

1. Which solution Worked (if any)
2. Detailed System Specs (especially OS service pack, cpu, and graphics card & driver combo)
3. (Only if you wish) list of all programs installed
See instructions to generate programs list to txt file:
http://helpdeskgeek.com/how-to/generate-a-list-of-installed-programs-in-windows/

SOLUTIONS ARRANGED BY SIMPLICITY:

Solution #1: Restart computer

Solution #2: Right click game in steam library-->Properties-->Set launch options-->type: -dx9--->Click ok

solution #3: Navigate to game folder and launch game directly via game executable (Right click game in library--->Properties-->Local Files tab-->Browse Local Files-->Bin32-->Crysis.exe)

Solution#4: Right click game executable (mentioned in step 3) ---> select properties--->Compatibility tab--->Check "Run this program in compatibility mode for:"---> In drop down menu select Windows XP SP2 (OR) Windows XP SP3 (OR) Windows Vista (OR) Windows Vista SP1 (OR) Windows Vista SP2--->Check "Run this program as administrator" under the privilege level section---> Click Apply---->Click OK--->Launch Crysis Executable

Note: You'll need to try each of the compatibility modes listed above

Solution#5: http://steamcommunity.com/app/17300/discussions/0/846944052809445128/

Solution#6: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1772488 (Not really a solution, but more of a suggestion)

Solution#7: Uninstall game, clean registry (manually or with registry cleaner), re-download, reinstall game, and restart computer.

Solution#8 *MOST SUCCESSFUL* http://steamcommunity.com/app/17300/discussions/0/864945401070748061/

Solution#9: (only try after trying solution #8 and recieve the "insert disk" error)

I've personally attempted all of these solutions and NONE of them worked; however, several people from here and around the web have reported that at least one of these solutions worked. My system specs are as follows:

System Specs:
Windows 7 Professional 64-bit SP1
AMD FX-4100 Zambezi 3.6Ghz AM3+
ASROCK N68-VS3 FX (Mobo)
8GB ddr3 1600 (dual channel)
XFX 7750HD Radeon 1GB Core Edition GDDR5 w/ AMD Catalyst 13.4
5.1 CH HD Audio (VIA® VT1705 Audio Codec)
Samsung HD204UI 2TB, ST3160812AS 160GB, ST3120813AS 120GB

***Update 03/22/2017*** I re-attempted to get the steam version working and its now working with a combination of solutions 4, 8, 9, and 10.

1. You download the 64-bit patch.
2. Transfer the contents of the 64-bit patch into the bin32 folder. (Make sure to overwrite all file versions that are identical.)

There were some additional steps I had to take myself. At first, I discovered that I was only able to get the game to work via the Crysis64.exe ran as administrator. It would work sometimes and crash other times. It seemed like it would have a better chance of working immediately after attempting to run the normal crysis.exe.

Later on the next day, I noticed that Crysis64.exe stopped working like it used to. I changed the compatibility mode of Crysis.exe to Vista sp2 and ran it as administrator. Now it runs all the time!

Please be aware that in order to change the Crysis.exe's compatibility mode, you have to run the compatibility troubleshooter for Windows 10.

I also ran Windows 10's "Launch Analysis" on the Crysis.exe. All it did was create a log file on my desktop, so I doubt it made a difference. You might want to try that too just to be thorough.

Lastly, please take note that I have upgraded my OS to Windows 10. I created the OP when I was still using Windows 7.

After 3 days of trying to get this thing to work, I finallly decided to to uinstall the game and use the CD key (you can find it in right hand side of Crysis' library page) and activate the game on Origin. I didn't want to do this because I wanted Steam to be the sole game download service on my computer, but they left me no choice. Their version of the game just doesn't work.

Just go here to create an EA account (if you haven't got one yet) and then activate your Crysis game using the CD Key I mentioned above. Link ---->https://activate.ea.com/gameactivation.do

Note: Make sure to completely uninstall the steam version BEFORE attempting to download the Origin version (also, delete the crysis folder in the steam\steamapp\common\ directory). The origin version of the game comes with both Bin32 and Bin64 folders and on my Win7 64-bit system, the 64-bit version automatically launches (assuming you launch from the desktop shortcut and not from the origin interface).

Origin's version of the game actually loads! I'm having some underscan issues on my HDMI monitor and I can't get vsync to turn on, but at least it works. I didn't need to mod any files or mess with compatibility modes. It works right out of the box...or should I say server? ;)

Excuse me mate can you max out the settings and play with over 60 fps?

I don't know exactly what frames I'm getting, but it's definitely not 60 fps. Right now I'm running it at 720p in windowed mode because I can't stand all the tearing I get in fullscreen. For some reason ALL games give me awful tearing if I don't enable Vsync. Not sure why.

If I had to estimate how many fps I'm getting, I'd guess it'd range from 21-45 and average 27. I know, it should definitely be at least a little bit higher than this, but I haven't tried optimizing anything yet. I remember having quite a few programs running in the background when I ran this, so I'll try to see how much I gain by running this game without anything else in the background.

EDIT
btw, I didn't max out the settings. I was running it on high.

Alright, I was able to resolve the underscan issue by a suggestion I found here:
http://www.pcgamer.com/forum/showpost.php?p=134165&postcount=7

The issue will only appear with HDMI monitors or HDTVs apparently. I'm not sure if it's an issue that occurs only with AMD cards, but that's possible. Basically you have to set your desktop to any resolution you wish to play your game at then you're supposed to go into the AMD control center and find the scaling setting to set overscan adjustment to 0%. I actually already knew that, but what I didn't know was that I had to adjust the overscan for the various refresh rates as well. For some reason Crysis runs in 50Hz as opposed to 60hz. So I set my monitor to 720p 50z and adjusted the scaling then reverted my desktop back to 1080p 60hz which is my native resolution and refresh rate. After that, I launched the game and the underscan was gone.

I also solved the Vsync issue. Apprently there are patches that Crytek released which added in-game Vsync options. Prior to the updates you needed to use a command console to enable vsync which didn't work for me. There are a total of three patches, but you only need to install 1.2 and 1.21. For an explanation of why, see the link here:
http://answers.ea.com/t5/Crysis/Patching-Crysis-1-to-latest-update-through-Origin/m-p/1629303#M958

Here's a link to the patches I used: http://crysis.filefront.com/files/Crysis/Official_Releases/Patches;10331

Cheers!
luckily this page is here for if I do decide to buy it one day. It'll help a lot. I would have been pissed if my copy didn't work.

Thank you :)

The Origin version worked - after jumping over a few more hoops! and why can't I activate the CD key in Origin instead of using your useful link! Now, if only I can get my settings to stick.

Still a pretty good game considering how old it is.

Thanks again.
Nothing of this works for me sadly.

Did you try activating the game on Origin as I described in my second post?

None of these worked for me but I knew I was able to run Crysis some time ago. For whatever reason I had played a few minutes after buying it on sale and decided to come back to it later. I tried deleting my old profile folder at "Documents\My Games\Crysis\Profiles" and suddenly it worked. At this point I was already using the bin64 solution so I left it that way.
