I think....you can...maybe not.
Add the game from store, do not continue with downloading it though
and then place the tribes game folder you already have into
c:Program Files(x86)/Steam/Steamapps/common. After you have placed it there, verify the game cache/integrity whatever you call it.

This may not work, i have only used this for a different game of mine
Not tested with tribes:ascend

or he could make a shortcut with: Add a game>nonsteam>then choose tribes

If you want the full steam integration the only way of doing it is uninstalling the non-steam client then installing it through steam. That's what I did. The main reason is that steam and TA downloadble client store their files in different locations; the tribes launcher is extremely picky about how it's launched, and it just wasn't worth the hassle of setting up symlinks or trying to find out the proper launch parameters.

Remember though: You might be able to download tribes via steam, but steam does *not* keep tribes updated. You gain very little except being able to have relevant links and access to steam cloud and such for screenshots.

*shrugs* that too, but iirc that doesnt allow you to use the steam overlay. Which i primarily use for chats. Id rather not have to alt tab (personally). Other than that... its as Tabs said if what i said earlier doesnt work (which i have no idea if it would for T:A)

this copied from another forum:
Just go into your launcher options and add "-steam" (without the quotes) to the game command line parameter.
Then (with Steam already open), when you launch Tribes:Ascend, it will act as a Steam game, with the shift-tab steam community overlay, allowing you to take steam screenshots, your game hours will be logged, and your friends will be alerted that you are in-game, etc. You do not need to ever actually download Tribes:Ascend through Steam to get the exact same functionality as the people that did.
