Space Empires 4 or 5? Or Both?
Hey there guys. Should I buy Space Empires 4, Space Empires 5, or just the double pack? I'm leaning towards the double pack right now.

I would also like to know if this game is worth it? Seen some negative forum posts, are these the norm or just haters?

neither! Stay away, its a broken game that will not work! You'll be lucky if it even starts let alone gets in a playable state. Please dont waste your money, I was lucky enough to get a refund but I dont know if everyone else will be

Well I'm sure some of us can figure out that a 6 year old game requires some attention to run correctly on newer systems. I find many reviews comparable to Masters of Orion an awesome classic game. Also, having a user group that provides mods seems easy to consider it a worthwhile game. Besides I have an older box available or just install something in a VirtualBox and run it from there... Anywho, question is if Space Empires IV Deluxe is different from the Space Empires IV and V which doesn't specify if the IV is also the same deluxe version?

I just bought both since they're on sale 75% off. I'll decide for myself which one is more fun. At least they're worth trying.

Yea I bought them both as well. I heard both good and bad things but I've played many a "broken unplayable game" in my time (big fan of Paradox so there ya go) to know that with a bit of patience you can perservere. I heard that mods are a MUST, however, especially for Space Empires 5

Yeah, apparently they had an issue combining the two for purchase and made them seperate. Got both also.

Great Game but you need to get the balanced mod at least to play a good game, also there is a effects mod as well.
also go and check out all the ships models in the space empire shipyards

I enjoy 5, myself, although I played 4 years back and it was fun, too. If I was going to complain about anything in 5 it would be the AIs being a bit easy, but that's just me. It is an older game, so there are some choppy moments on new systems, but I haven't had any issues comparable to other posters.

Would anybody have a recommendation for a good start for a new player such as myself? I've heard install this mod or that mod, but I wanna learn vanilla first. Any good videos or anything to help?

Nut shell? SE4 is a pretty good game. SE5 however is a broken mess not even made by the same company, let alone dev team, involved in the first 4. If its 5 you want to play then you will have to employ some of the mods available for it. Those will fix most of the mechanics related bugs and the AI related bugs. Its not all doom and gloom however, all the previous SE games are alot of fun, even today. SE2 was what got me started with 4X strategy games and is a great game to start with. SE3 expanded SE2's content and made itself moddable to anyone with a text editor. SE4 fixed many of SE3's problems (im lookin at you 9 different colony ships for the 9 different planet types XP) and very much improved the UI.

It seems that you have the right mindset going in. This game is for players looking for a niche within a niche. I have looked hard, but never found games that are more detailed than the Space Empires series when it comes to things like ship design, diplomacy and espionage.

The community seems divided on this, but personally I prefer SE5 over SE4, even though SE4 is more "stable". My reason is that SE5 has much more enjoyable space battles and has some added details such as even more detailed supply management than in SE4.

Don't even touch SE5 without the balance mod, though! I'd go so far as to say the stock version is broken without it.

I don't know about #4, but #5 dosn't work unless you are running on XP or 98 or something outdated. It wont work if you have Windows 7.

SE 5 works perfectly fine on Win 7 as that's what I have. Have had no issues running it. But you will want to add mods to it later to get more replay value out of it. Obviously SE IV has more mods if that's what you're interested in. Both are fun games however in their vanilla versions.

SE5 works flawlessly on my WIN7 and WIN8 machines (64bit) but the balance mod is ab absolute MUST. Without it the game is just not worth the cash.
