Windows 8.1 Help
So, earlier today, I tried to launch the game for the first time (I got it on sale), and the entire computer froze up while a short, low-quality music cue played in the background, forcing a hard shutdown.

Later, I tried to play it again, but I keep getting a message stating the game can't find Steam.dll. It's clearly in the Steam root directory, and I've tried everything: starting Steam as an admin, starting the game as an admin, using Compatibility Mode, and reinstalling. Nothing.

Is there ANY fix for Windows 8.1, or is this game completely incompatible with Windows 8.1 and I've just wasted over $3?

It can be made to work with Vista and later Windows, though often at the cost of poor performance.
Try installing it outside of Program Files (if your Steam folder is there).

This guy's fix with the mklink commands did it for me. An easier way to open the cmd box than he describes is to just hold down the windows key while you push r. Then type cmd. Otherwise, follow his instructions to the letter. Had to do this on both my desktop and my laptop to get the game to run on win8.1

You could copy steam.dll from parent directory (few levels upper).
