For a long time I wanted to play Velvet Assassin, so I decide to give it a go. The short answer did I like the game is– yes, I did.
The game takes place in the WWII and you take the role of Violette Summers, British spy, tasked with hard and sometimes impossible jobs to do. The main character is based on Violette Szabo, real spy and saboteur in WWII. This is the only connetion between the game and Szabo. There isn't a story in here. You will be tasked to assassinated someone or blow up something. That's it. It would be nice to have some sort of story, but you fight againts the nazis and this is enough for me.
The game is console port and it's very good one. The graphics are decent. Bear in mind that the game came out in 2009. All human model stand the test of time, but I can't say the same thing about the envoirment, especially some buildings. Some textures are just awful. But graphics are not that impornat. The gameplay is what matters here. One word – solid. Like I mention before, your main objectives are assassination and sabotage. On your way you will end prematurely a lot of nazi lifes. The game is linear. The fans of Hitman may not like this. Through the hole game the you will face 3-4 soldiers in a area, walking on their predetermined routes and you will have to find your window of opportunity to act. The sneaking and killing enemy is awesome. Lurking in shadows, hiding in wardrobes, toilets, bushes and waiting for your moment. Most times you will be moving slowly and silently. But be careful not walk on piecies of glass on the ground, they will announce your presence. In the down left corner is Violette silhouette. It shows your life and when there is an blue aura around it and around Violettes model, you are hidden completely, unless some enemy is pretty close to you. Your main weapon is knife. Also you have pistol with silencer, but be careful when using it, it will attract soldiers. Like in real life and in this game, it doesn't mean that the silencer stop the sound completely. Sometimes it's too bright or you don't have window of opportunity. When this is the case, just whistle to attract a soldier. If you find pistol without silencer, shotgun, sniper rifle or assault file StG44 you'll have to know one thing – drop the sneaking and start shooting. You also have flare gun. It's usefull for set enemies on fire. You can't get the weapons from dead enemies. You can find them in lockers. Sometimes you may want more direct methods of extermination. Engaging a firefigth is possible, but not recommended. But you can use the environment – shooting barrel with gasoline or anohter with toxic gas, electrocuting and even pull the pin on a granade hanging on soldier belt and that way you will kill multiple enemies. But here lies a little problem for me. When the granade explode, nearby soldiers doesn't react. This is the same with the barrel and even the doors. Every single door is making a sound when you open it and unless someone is really close, he won't here it. This just take me out of the game, when I was immersed. But this little annoyences are not everywhere, except the doors and thigs like the barrels and granades are not always required. There is one interesting mechanic, which often will help you a lot. This is morphine. You will find syringes with him and when yo use it everything freezes and you may to kill the enemy or run past him. Sometimes is required to dress in nazi uniform, but then sneaking is immposible. You will have to walk slowly and patiently and to stay out of sight, because enemies will recognize you. The AI is okay. Soldiers are not too curious and the don't do anything unexpected. And in this game there are upgrades. They are in 3 categories – morphine, stealth and strength. And how do you acquire points for them? By finding hidden items. Here is the biggest problem I have with the game. If you don't look for them you can't upgrade. It will be more practicle to be awarded with more points for stealth kills. This seems more reasonable to me.
For a game to be fun it need also a good level design. Here you can find it. The level maybe linear, but environmentally they are really good. You will see village, church, harbor, bunkers fill with toxic gas, museum and others. The lighting and sound design are great. The guns sound great, footsteps are loud when they have to be, pounding music contribute for really good and tense atmosphere. The voice acting is also great. Most of the time you will here Violette narrating in the beginning of every mission and germans talking to each other.
There a lot of little touches in the gameplay and in the atmosphere that I quite like. For examaple: you can push a box so you won't be lighted or you can smash electric panel for the same reason, soldiers are singing and so on. Nothing, gameplay-wise, is necessary for you to do, but it's nice to know you some variety.
The game is using PhysX and you may have a problem with it. It may be missing a folder that is required for the game to run and you have check Steam forum how to solve this. It's nothing too difficult.
When you remove the annoying things and you don't mind linear level design, I think you can find pretty good stealth game. And if you want to make the Velvet Assassin more hardcore experience, there is a mod that removes all highlights on characters, loot, all UI messages and subtitles, decreases the grain filters on assassination animations. It also changes Violette's costume to the pilot suit during Morphine mode. I recommend it.
