Simply put, this game is amazing.
I will start with the campaign. Impressively long, this is the sort of game that, even though I have far too much to play, I come back to ever 4-6 months and replay the campaign. I've finished it on the highest difficulty, but it is still really fun to play on the lower difficulties to try out different troop combinations and tactics.
The characters are very likeable, and I really came to like each one individually. While there is no perma-death for squadmates, I still felt upset when I lost one during a mission.
The missions themselves are well built, it is very clear what each enemy type you encounter can do, and the bosses in each level give you a clear end point. The maps are very individualistic, but still have a synergy between each of the maps set on a particular world.
Progressing your characters feels rewarding, and leveling up always feels like you have gained something, even if you don't get a perk. The wargear is interesting, variable, and there is a true sense of customisation for all of the squads at your disposal, which themselves are very individual.
The skirmishes are very enjoyable to play, especially if you want to just mess around. The only issue here is with the ai. The lowest difficulty for the ai means it will just turtle eternally, and the second lowest means it will play very aggressively, and the computers will just build tanks and happily wipe each other out with no input from you.
Each of the 4 races available in skirmishes have a very different feel and playstyle, and the same goes for the 3 heroes available to each race. While some of these are less useful than others, they all do some things, and the wargear that can be equipped to them again gives a very real range of customisation options.
Another small issue with the skirmishes is that nobody is playing it online anymore, at least in this installment. There is still a dedicated player base in the latest expansion; Retribution, and finding a match is fairly fast. Playing online is a lot of fun, and the community for this game, while small, is very friendly.
The third game mode; The Last Stand, is amazing, but again being played only in Retribution. It is so much fun, and people are on it very often and are very good to new players. Customisation of units is as good as ever, and each of the heroes feels totally unique, and hugely useful in their own individual way.
The two expansions available to this game are both very good. Chaos Rising adds a new playable race for skirmish, new units to the existing races, and a campaign that is about half the length of the original, the same quality, and has all the characters from the first game that you have come to know and love, with an addition to your team. The new mechanics in the campaign of Chaos Rising fit in like they were meant to be there. Very worth the time and money.
The Retribution expansion did a few wonderful things. First and foremost, Retribution's online components go directly through steam, rather than through Games for Windows Live, meaning that it is actually possible to use them. People are on The Last Stand and multiplayer skirmishes a lot, and are very friendly. The Retribution campaign is fairly short, but instead of there only being a Space Marine campaign there is now a campaign for each of the 6 playable races. The new race added by Retribution is also very well designed, and fits well with the existing ones.
Finally, the graphics, sound and physics engine are all brilliant, especially considering this game is about 6 years old. The physics of collapsing buildings and ragdolls can bug occasionally, but only ever in funny ways, like when you shoot an orc, only to have its body spiral across the screen and up into the sky. Apart from this I haven't encountered any real bugs in the game.
My closing comment is that if you played and enjoyed any games from the first Dawn of War series, definately get this. It improves on everything from the first games, and puts a whole new spin on how the campaign is played.
TL;DR, buy it, it is fun.
