I dont really know, how I should think about this game. While I played Dawn of War for its multiplayer, and Dark Crusade for its campaign (and multiplayer), Dawn of War 2 is like the two side of a blade.
The campaign was...well...more than great, it was awesome! While you had simple unit progression in Dark Crusade, you had now the control over small squads you were able to level up, skill and equip!
The campaign story itself wasnt that great sadly. The multiplayer is a desaster!
Playing as the Bloodravens again, you have to defend their home system against a big horde of orcs and later tyranids.
The campaign works like a round strategy game, where you equip your squads, control your planets and choose missions based on their urgency, difficulty and reward.
Choosing a mission, the real game begins in RTS style and you have up to four unit groups to control. Every group is lead by a hero unit, that has special abilitys and weapons.
Mostly fighting against overwelming enemy forces, you often have to fight tricky and stealthy, use good tactics and know, how to use your forces abilitys.
With every mission you get XP and items and can specialize your troops on melee or ranged combat, health and ability points. You get new weapons and new equipment, and sometimes gamechanger like the terminator armor, that awesomely upgrades your troops (except the scout of course) and gave me a big wtf with the upgraded Space Marine Stormtroopers, with teleport and big hammers. Awesome!
Having 4 units in every mission but a lot more usable units in your rooster, you can choose, which units you use in a mission, desiding on their abilitys and firepower and the enemys you will face.
Now two things shall be said:
The campaign is theoretically endless. You can play as many missions as you want. No pressure to do the final missions. You just have to hold down the enemys enough to keep the Xenos Infection low.
The whole campaign is coop. Instead of 4 units, each player controls 2. Nothing more to say.
Now the big bad:
Beside the campaign, there wasnt really anything useful left in this game. I tried the multiplayer, but was highly disappointed. Buildings are completely gone in this game. You only have a main building and troops. Confusing, frustrating and totaly not RTS like. I played Dawn of War for a long time and I played Starcraft and Age of Empires 2 and I couldnt get any fun in the Dawn of War 2 multiplayer.
I would like to give this game a good rating for its awesome campaign, but it hasnt much to offer beside it. It is like a HD version of Dawn of War without RTS gameplay. Why not making a complete Shooter out of...wait they already did that and it was awful...
