I am just going to take a minute and write down a few thoughts I have had about this game as well as the additional games in this entire franchise. Because it is on a sale at this particular time I am jotting this down, I see from time to time a lot of people who wonder if they should get this game. The quick and easy answer is of course a most definite YES!, and I think for two very good reasons.
I will go ahead and put as the #1 reason is that, given how long this game has been out, the developers Relic Entertainment is in my opinion one the best video game development studios to have ever come along. They have done such an incredible job with the way they made this game. Everything from the production values to the voice over acting is just a perfect example of putting big budget resources to good use.
Another thing about this is, if you take a moment to look at the news and announcements pages for these games, Relic is supporting this series and franchise to its fullest extent. There are lots of updates and general postings being made about these games on a constant basis to this day. Good communication with your player base goes a loooong way to helping people make good decisions about what games they should buy.
The #2 reason I could recommend getting this series and games, is that the level of polish and overall feel of the games themselves is very top notch. These games run extremely well across a huge variety of PC configurations, low end systems to the very latest PC's. Along with this is that these games play very good without huge game-breaking bugs ruining your playing experience, seems like Relic did a great job with making sure as many bugs were taken care of before they released this series a long time ago, in general I found that all of Relic's older games including CoH, The Homeworld series, etc. were done very well.
Some of the other things I enjoy about this series is that while I don't know a whole lot about the Warhammer Universe, I thought the story and characters are good enough to be interesting. Great campaign play, Good multiplayer action, and just altogether a solid, nicely done game series.
And lastly, I should go ahead and mention specifically that the DoW II games are just slightly different from the original W40K DoW series. The original DoW series had a classic C&C base-building, resource gathering model while the DoW II series switches over and gets rid that in favor of a squad based, heroes model.
Some people were surprised at the change, some liked it while others didn't, in my opinion it looked as if they wanted to go the other direction and that was fine. I would recommend in fact that anybody who wonders what the big difference is, is to maybe watch a youtube game review/let's play video that way you could see for yourself and decide that way because no one but you can decide if you would like that or not.
