Creative mode: Cannot send aliens.
I can see from this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hOjPZZIh8og that creative mode is meant to allow you to spawn aliens in to test your defenses. It also says so when you choose creative mode in the first place. I, however, do not have that colourful "Creative" drop-down menu on the right hand side as shown in the video.

Is this a bug? I'd very much like to be able to spawn aliens in, otherwise creative mode is kind of pointless.

I'm using Linux Mint (Ubuntu 12.04) 64bit, and it seems like everything else in the game works fine.

Same here. Works fine under Windows. On Linux, it's just not there, as OP described. Xubuntu 12.10 here.

Same here, no alien spawning under Linux-version. I remember from playing under Windows, that there is also different buildings to build, but they haven't any functions...

Edit: wasn't there also limitless money under Windows in Creative mode? Many things are different. Strange...

I have found an archived thread in the official forum:

It states that the game searches for .hmd files in the harvestClientData/mods folder. In this folder there are some zip files located containing the mods. For some reason the linux version of the game does not seem to search for mods inside of the zip files.

The workaround:
Extract these zip files into the mods folder - and the mod menu shall appear as soon as you click on creative mode in the startup screen of the game :)

Yes, very good news indeed! Have to try this soon, I'll report who did it go!
