Unrealistic airplane encounters...
So on my 3rd patrol, shiny new gato class in apr '42, as soon as I leave Midway for east china sea about 100 nm out the entire force of the IJN planes descends upon me. Literally every 5 minutes of game time there is a new aircraft heading my direction. In reality not only the massive numbers of planes sent at me is unrealistic, where exactly are they coming from? These are small zero fighters and val dive bombers too, they are way out of range from any jap land bases and I doubt I have an entire Japanese carrier group stalking me personally all the way across the pacific... This is only 42, I really cant imagine the planes being any thicker later in the war because the IJN was pretty thorough to have constant coverage of my patrol course all the way to target.

I am usually against using mods, but if there is one that adjusts the randomness of these airplane encounters I'd download it.

I'd recommend using Trigger Maru Overhauled, if you also have U-Boat Missions; it will make airplane encounters more realistic, along with lots of other good stuff.

Ok I suppose I'll try it out, thanks

Edit: DL and installed yesterday, took an s boat out for a few patrols in the celebes, the first thing you notice is the water, much higher res textures and just 'seems' more realistic. The differences obvious but also good.

And the Japanese Imperial Navy backed off a bit, thankfully, among other things... seems more SH1-ish. Nothing bad so far except 1 or 2 crashes in like 10 hrs of gameplay, very good record for 3rd party software really. Editx2: One of the freezes was because I loaded a campaign from stock version, so that doesnt count (Duh).

I usually avoid Wake island to get away from the float planes. However, the battle of Midway was early 1942. I plotted the planes and chased them up north for days (games time) and never found the carriers they had to be coming from.

the more the planes the better it is that means there is a carrier around the area.

I'm playing the Steam version of SH4(apparently unpatched v1.3) and have to agree with the OP.
The enemy air encounters are tedious and repetitive to the point of being very, very annoying.
Why didn't the authors want people to play this game; why drive people away with such mind-numbing tedium?

Not only do the Japanese have air patrols out on every point of a 360 degree compass at every base, but the patrols are doubled and tripled and staggered(were there even that many aircraft in the entire Japanese WW2 armed forces?) to ensure there is absolutely NO chance one can surface and recharge batteries, except perhaps in numerous teeny-tiny, stolen moments.
The only viable option that doesn't drive one to thoughts of suicide or uninstalling SH4 is remaining submerged ALL day long at very slow speed or stopped.

Absolutely ridiculous.

Let's not talk about the 20 gazillion Japanese TFs and convoys sailing the Pacific; mostly on a direct collision course with one's submarine.
