Really Struggling right from the start
Hi Guys, I am really finding this a struggle, I used to own the game ages ago and struggled then. I bought it again when it was in the sale and I know I would love it. However on the first Pearl Harbour mission I got to the harbour no problem, took my photos, the message says I have completed the tasks. But when I try and get home I just cannot do it. I assume I am supposed to get back to port? But when I do I get as far as my battery allows undetected but as soon as I need to recharge my battery I am inundated with aeroplanes. I managed to avoid the first few and they didn't see me but then my battery was at 10% and needed to be recharged again.

Then of course one saw me and all hell broke loose, at one point I had between 7 & 10 planes hunting for me. My crew managed to shoot about 5 down but eventually of course I was destroyed, I never got my battery higher than 20% and was destroyed while trying to submerge to try and change my location. I just found it impossible to do, I don't want to go down the route of giving myself an unlimited battery.

How on earth do I recharge my battery for the trip home without being spotted and inundated with planes?

Neil. Have you tried running on the Surface at night to recharge your Batteries? Then submerged during daylight at a low speed? Sslow progress but you'll get there!

Hi, to be honest I did manage to get to the night on one attempt but even then I couldn't get to the surface for long enough. I was rammed by a destroyer that came from nowhere! Perhaps Submarine captain isn't my destiny ;-) I tried again just now and again just inundated with planes even before they spot me, there's just so many of them and no battery left to get away

I would like to suggest you to patch to latest version, I had this problems also as far i remember.

Additional or the way I play SH4 only, is with MODS.

I thin Trigger Maru Overhaul MOD is handling the plane and battery issues from Original game.
for example i have an officer who help to reload battery faster (it is standard unit from the MOD).

And i remember to read somewhere about plane aggressive changed with a later patch or also mod.

Hi Thanks, I've got the game via Steam so it is the patched game, I've been looking for some mods but didn't find that one. I thought maybe the best mods would be offline now.

no, that definitely not true. The MOD community is very active for SH4 and up to date.

You should begin here, :

I think most games are patched to the latest version on Steam, but not true for SH4. Unless they changed it, the Steam version of the game is only at 1.3. You can download the 1.4 patch at the UBI website. Of course, you should be patched to 1.5 if you also bought the U-Boats addon I think, in which case you can use the mods that make this game great.

Hi, Yeah I've got the U-Boat missions add on, I am trying the RFB mod at the moment which I like the look of. Is there a mod which makes the mission start point closer to the target area? I really don't have time to play a full career when I have to travel so far to and from a mission point

Hi guys, I'm doing better but still have problems with Destroyers, basically if I decide I can't get at them or say I don't have enough torpedoes and I'm at risk i try and run. I deploy decoys go deep and try and get away but attacks keep coming and I'm always sunk. The only success I have had is when I have managed to sink all the destroyers in the convoy. If I need to run I simply can't get away. 150ft down and still they sink me

Mod it for sure- Go to subsim.com. Click into SH4 page. There's a mod to reduce the amount of planes that the game generates, & for some fun, check out the Ultrasubs mods. There are 2. One is American Ultrasubs; the other is German Ultrasubs. I believe the latter includes both mods in 1. You get like 250 fast reloading high powered torps, hull strength raised to 100%, overpowered deck & flak guns, & much faster speeds. You can literally go into the Battle of Midway campaign & sink all surface steel-no prob.

Thanks Mental I'll give them a try, I've got a little sidetracked with Skyrim again, I made the mistake of re-installing the editor and now I'm hooked again!
