Mine doesn't crash, mine just doesn't start. Looking at the other discussions I think Windows/steam updates have broken it?
At this point I don't know, it does the same thing for SH4 U boat missions also.
I´ve got the same prob. I first tried the methods of the other crash-thread, but suddenly the upon written error message popped up... awesome.
Me too, same error message..
I tried to reinstall the game on C:\.. but no effects.
I just can't play the game :(

I put in a steam help desk ticket, if I find out anything I will post it.
This is the replay from steam:

Please exit Steam and go to the folder called C:\Program Files\Steam\ (this is the default location for a Steam installation - if you set a different installation directory, you will need to browse to it).

Delete all of the files in this folder except:

- Steamapps and Userdata folders

- Steam.exe (this file is listed as an application and features the black and white Steam logo)

Restart your computer.

Then, launch Steam.exe from within the Steam installation folder, and not from a pre-existing shortcut.

With Steam running, re-test the original issue.

Note: This process will not affect your currently installed games.

Additionally, please complete this process for your installed game(s):

Title: Verifying Game Cache Files (GCF)

NOTE: There may be files that fail to validate. This is normal and can be ignored.

////// AND IT WORKED!!!!! Thank you Steam support!!!! ///////
maybe they should call it silent starter. i've tried every trouble shooter recommended and still nothing, but yet when i check my task manager it lists Silent Hunter 4 as running. i'd be happy even in low res
