Darwinia
Abnormal behavior, or is it me?
I just bought that wonderful game and I’m a bit puzzled…
I’m stuck at the very beginning (the Garden). Any of the Engineer nor the Squad I create have a lifespan bigger than half a minute. Each time I create one (especially a squad) and sent it away, they barely manage to go to the end of the first part of the island where it the first (and only) acitve tower (in other words, where lies the second pack of viruses). Then they always are terminated. This is when I’m lucky; otherwise they can be terminated the second I created it.

Either I’m really bad at this game or there’s something wrong at this…
I remember having made through the demo of Darwinia (which was at least the 2 first levels) and in my memory I don’t recall having such trouble.

So, please anyone, can you tell me if I’m playing it wrong from the start (and how can I avoid it) or tell me you never experienced this and I have to report this to Steam/Introversion…

PS- I’m playing it on a good PC running Windows 8 pro.

I'll help you play Darwinia if you contact me on Steam.

It seems the gameplay was greatly modified between the demo and the actual game (this or my memory was somewhat altered) but I managed to go through the first level.
Still I find some commands a bit awkward and the lifespan of units terribly random.
Anyway, let’s play!
I passed 3 first levels today and everything works fine...
Try uninstall/purge Darwinia's folder and reinstall it maybe.
Also you may put on YT short video about your troubles and let me see your issue.
Maybe it's Win8 issue? Can you try some previous Win version? Have you played Darwinia on Win7 or WinXP?
Has this been resolved then? Hope so and you are enjoying this great game :)

Yes, bills6693. Obviously the issue was a combination of bad memory from me and a terribly hard gameplay (to me) :)
good :) hope you enjoyed it.
I have found some bugs in this game, maps that have bits not totally bound together and odd behavior of darwinians in some occasions. However, this haven't made such a negative impact on the playability; at least in my view. I find this game rather easy to play, once one knows the procedures; more like a pastime.
Here I thought you were just sending off your units too closely to the infection. The basic "red line" virus can overwhlem in groups if you send your soldiers too close to them.
The darwinians will do there own thing, even if you are using an officer. Targets nearby an officer will affect how the darwinians react (i.e. a spawn pylon or a non-aligned dish). Yes, some of the maps have sections that aren't utilized. I just tend to ignore those areas.

Are you hitting the destroy unit key?

Check this. Default key for destroing unit is "c".

It's a hard life being a grunt. A hard, short life. A hard, short, misery-filled life. That's why when the apocalypse comes I'm just going to hide on a rooftop with a big harpoon and a man-sized barbecue.
My problem was manually moving the squad past the narrow part, because they will not path around the water. You have to move them in straight lines avoiding the water (and shields). My problem NOW is that I can't figure out how to get the Darwinians in the second level across the water, since there is only one unshielded path to the rescue point....

You need to look for those little radar dishes, which are usually next to water; then, align them : Select the radar next to your Darwinians, then aim for another radar on a close island by clicking on it. There must be a white beam appearing, allowing your Darwinians to travel from one radar/island to another. ;)

Ah, I thought they had something to do with it, but I couldn't get them to cross it, I didn't know I could control the dishes themselves. I'll try that level again (got to restart it, trying not to get my Darwinians stuck on an island, I tried to send my Engineers to the first Incubator instead... that didn't work very well, they don't path around barriers :P )
