2004 was probably a great year for video games (Half Life 2, Halo 2, Fable , etc). Far Cry is one of those. This is the game that not only introduced the Cry Engine (famous for powering Crysis 2-3) but a start of one of the coolest FPS franchises in history. Far Cry is set in a mysterious set of islands in Micronesia (the Pacific). You play as Jack Carver, a former soldier that gets sent in to sabotage a research facility that is experimenting with mutated soldiers and animals by some evil scientist guy namd Krieger. The island levels are beautifully crafted. You can also swim, ride vehicles such as trucks and boats and collect new weapons. There's a pretty good variety in the game's arsenal. The story for Far Cry however is basic and simple so don't expect anything special.
But if you've played Far Cry 2-4 and want to try the game that started it all, you might be disappointed to find out that FC1 is actually linear, not open world. However, several levels feel wide enough to give you the illusion that you're exploring. The game is also increasingly difficult. I managed to finish this on medium difficulty for the first time but the last levels were so hard, I actually had to use godmode for cheats. There was just no way I was gonna finish it without that. And I already went through really hard levels without cheating in the first place. But despite that, I do recommend this. It's a great game but in retrospect, I am not sure if FC1 did anything considered revolutionary at the time.
