Summary: A challenging, but rewarding and realistic old-school FPS.
Sale Price: $2.50 (what I paid)Pros:
-The difficulty (I'll count this as a pro). I played it in the middle difficulty (out of five) and it was, by far, the hardest FPS I've ever played. The whole game forces you to rely on split-second timing and perfect long-distance aiming to survive. This makes you much more tense than newer FPS with regenerating health ever seem to do. You're often forced to methodically clear areas slowly and precisely, which is much different than most run-n-gun games these days. Far Cry 3's hardest difficulty was significantly easier than this.
-The stealth works very well. Your only chance at survival is to creep around in the woods. The "attention meter" is your best friend. Also your night-vision goggles are essential at spotting enemies in the distance and in the dark.
-The AI is very advanced for the time. The bad guys will sound alarms to bring in help (which was reused in FC3), and will take cover. However, they do occasionally do stupid things that shows how old the AI is, but it's not too bad.
-The maps are semi-open world, with a set destination but often with multiple paths through the jungle or in vents. This design is the main thing that distinguished the game from other shooters at the time, and it's still cool today.
-The graphics are very good for the time, particularly the map size and the foilage. Crytek are the masters of realistic video game foilage, and it shows here.Cons:
-There's no quick-save, just checkpoints. You'll often find yourself running like a madman through the jungle in hopes of passing an autosave checkpoint. A game this hard needs to allow you to save more often, although any time you want probably isn't ideal either. There is a console command that lets you quick-save, which I used towards the end of the game when I was fed up. I recommend you decide at the beginning whether you will use it and then stick with your choice.
-There's a bug that allows enemies to see you through tents and sometimes walls. I hear, there's a fan-patch online to fix this, along with some graphical improvements. I honestly didn't notice the wall thing at all, and there's not very many tents in the game in the first place.
-Finally, the plot is equivalent to a pretty average B-movie story. The voice-acting is somewhat dubious, and the main character, though fairly memorable, doesn't seem to enjoy anything at all.
-Multiplayer is dead and almost certainly isn't coming back.
