Having no nostalgia or rose tinted glasses for this game I can firmly say this game dousn't really stand well against the test of time. When it was new and innovative Im sure people looked at it like it was great. I can firmly say that this game isn't that great. Its definetly dated and in relative to game design of more recent its just inferior.
Is it fun? Yeah, but more often than not I found I was having fun only to just die with no real idea who or what killed me or how. Then being forced to reload and play what might be a lengthy part of the game which ultimately undoes any fun it was the first time. Also the fun is to few and far in between.
Gameplay genereally revolves around getting from A to B and killing everyone who gets in the way in between. Sometimes B is an objective or a bomb you need to blow something up which means you need to go get the bomb then back track usually. Theres vehicles peppering the game that add some variety aswell as a myriad of weapons. Some of which are quite a bit more usefull than others. Theres a combination of both semi-open world maps and corridors though the game is best when outside in a semi-open world map where the AI is best to play against
The AI has issues. They do that old thing games used to do (and bad games still do) where enemies will snap to you and shoot immediatly if you so much as poke your head out while they are alerted, while some other times they won't even be looking the right way or they will just stare at you. Or if your driving on a boat at full speed they will still be hitting you no matter how fast you are going. Its compounded by the fact tracers dont necesarrily follow where the bullets are traveling or hitting (which is especially common in older and cheaper games) so it can be hard knowing exactly if your hitting or what your getting hit by (next to no problem when your on foot shooting though when using mounted weapons it is). Another issue is that in close quarters the AI shoots so accurate and fast that with guns one guy can pretty much take most your armor and health away. Which while you did everything right, all it took was one rogue guy and a bad checkpoint and now your saved with less than 50% hp and no armor. Luckily theres usually not much terraferma between health and armor, though sometimes it can be quite a drag to get to them. Ironically regenerating HP would actually make this game more enjoyable especially with how difficult it is and how little damage you can take anyway. An issue I have found is that RPG guys are way to often. RPG wielding enemies will shoot from ridiculous ranges at you, fortunately RPGS travel pretty slow but its still annoying especially with the blast radius. Another point about explosions, they are very inconsistant. If you shoot a rocket anywhere near a vehicle (such as using the jeep mounted RPG to blow guys out of cover) and even relatively far away you will 1 shot kill yourself. I think I played this on challenging, so I advise playing it on normal or easy, unfortuantely on easy and normal the AI are pretty stupid and can just barely hit you with my testing. Yep, its one of those games where instead of making the AI linearly more challenging its basically a cliff of difficulty.
The mutants are an interesting addition but have so little variety that theres only like 3 or 4 diffrent ones and compared to the humans they arn't fun to fight due to little or no tactics but they can kill you with incredible ease in some cases. But by the end of the game theres a over reliance on mutants with rocket launchers to make it difficult and it really stops being interesting by then. They soak up so much damage that its easier in most cases to just go past or around them and since you move so slow it can be hard to dodge away from them and their spalsh damage which again is the reason I prefer not to fight them.
It gets worse when your going up against armored guys who will soak up anything short of a headshot (So thats where Far Cry 2 got that design idea from...) And the inconsistant nature of the AI just gets worse. Some bushes that should conceal you the AI might see right through and get alerted and shoot you, while the opposite also happens. Sometimes AI decides they want to dump a magazine and hit you with a good number of rounds while at medium distance.
Though for all its bad, the AI does try basic tactics such as sneaking and they do exhibit independant like thinking capabilities. Instead of the game saying you are here (which does happen) the AI will exhibit cases where NPCs will search for you and while one may find you the others wont be informed of your location in the world until they learn of it. Or atleast thats what it seems like, its not as good as Far Cry 2 and both pale in comparison to Arma and mil sim games. The mutants don't seem to do much in terms of tactics though.
Saving is not very good. Unlike past games like Doom or HL1 saves are check point based and not very good. Sometimes they are to far between and with no capability to save yourself you are at the will of the save system. So a shoot out your having trouble getting past means you have to reload and get back to the fight just to try to get past it. These days check points and auto saving is much better than this but this is far from that and really needed a manual save.
Vehicles pepper the world and levels and offer variance to the gameplay which is especially nice with the boat levels as they are some of the largest levels and offer the most tactical choices aswell as looking the best. I really like the reflection in water when used in games. Unfortunately land mass dousn't usually get reflected due to a glitch in the steam version regarding modern OS compatability if I remember.
Compatability wise, the game is just barely there. Im honestly surprised the game actually works and dousn't crash or have many issues. Its advisable to download a fan made updated (1.41) or some other mods that make it so enemies dont see through buildings (primarily tents and shacks how the f*ck did that get through QA?) aswell as some address other glitches or add stuff to the game. If you can help it, don't buy the Steam version but instead buy the GOG version. Sometimes when I try to close the game the game will give a black screen and keep running. As I said it just barely works.
The story is a throw away. Its like the John Carmack quote. The story here is just ultimately to give you a reason to go kill and shoot people and its pretty stupid and goofy but not entertaining on its own or anything worth mention.
The GOG version costs the same and is more open aswell comes from a truly free (freedom wise) service in terms of DRM.
I wouldn't recommend this game unless you are heavy into classic FPS games or unless your looking for a decent but hard FPS game. If you just want a good or great game this just isn't it, Far Cry 2 is better in some aspects especially gameplay though so I would recomend that one more so. If you really care about the Far Cry series your not missing much if anything at all. If you do want to play it don't put it above normal and maybe even easy and it might even be worth it to stop playing the game before you get to the latter levels as story wise and mechanics wise your missing nothing. Best parts are when your in an open area and fighting humans anyway. Also the final fight is intensly difficult for what feels like all the wrong reasons. Its all the worst parts of the game put together to just make it hard. So theres nothing your going to miss if you stop playing before the final mission or around the time the game turns more into a corridor shootery type game.
