I would say the most important part of a good drift is your speed and angle into the corner. The speed and angle will have to change depending on the stats of your car, i.e. grip, acceleration, etc.
I can't speak as to which circuit is "best", but my favorite for drifting is the Okotuma drift circuit. (I might have misspelled that)
I'm not sure what you mean by playing by yourself. When you test drive a car in career mode, you race against your lap record, maybe that's what you mean.
