guide on how to play in multiplayer
It took a long time but me and my friend finally got this game to work in multiplayer. For others trying to get it to work in multiplayer, follow these steps:

1. Download tungle and make a tunngle account. Tungle works better than Hamachi as we found.
2. Go to the sacred lobby on tunngle, your friend should also join the lobby
3. Look at the IP tunngle gave you, remember that. its in the bottom left of the window. Go to c: program files x86/steam/steamapps/common/sacred in windows explorer, and in the setting file, change the network_IP_address and the network_lobby to be your tunngle IP. There are actually 2 settings files, the game one and the steam one. Change it on both.
4. have your friend do the same but have the network lobby be your tunngle IP, not his
5. In game, make sure ISDN/modem is checked in the network settings instead of LAN. there is a bug in LAN so you have to use ISDN/Modem

6. now host the game and have your friend join

I have windows 7 and he has windows 8 and we never had issues running the game, but getting multiplayer to work was really hard

There is also another way to play online, if you don't want to use tunngle: http://steamcommunity.com/app/12320/discussions/0/622955136054050626/

I think it's a little bit easier to use, but you have to be able to configure port forwarding in your router in order to get it work.

It's always good to have multiple options for people!
