Crash on startup after Windows 8 upgrade. I'm desperate.
I upgraded my computer from Windows 7 to Win 8 through an upgrade plan. GTA IV was already installed on the computer and worked fine. After Win 8, GTA crashes on starup after the Social Club login with the message "GTA IV has encountered a problem and must close".

I've tried doing a clean install of GTA IV, reinstalling GFWL numerous times, disabling and renabling the 3.5 Microsoft Framework through the control panel. I have a feeling its SecuROM but the compatibility tab does not appear when I click on properties.

Please help me.

Unfortunately Windows8 seems to be more geared towards "tablets applications" rather than gaming, but;

Navigate to where you have it installed...
Example path may be something like:

C:\Program Files (x86)\steam\steamapps\common\grand theft auto iv\GTAIV
Of course, the path on your computer could be different according to where you have Steam installed on your computer.

Try setting the LaunchGTAIV.exe Compatibility Mode (right-click on it, Properties, Compatibility-tab) to Run as Admin and for Windows2000 -Mode or maybe Windows XP SP 3 -mode, and see if that works for you.

If that still doesn't work, maybe try the following:

Make a shortcut to the "LaunchGTAIV.exe" and place it on your Windows desktop and use the shortcut to launch the game instead.

If it still doesn't work, read this post by another User that helped them to get GTAIV running with their Windows8:

Another post that might help:

And, another thread that might be of interest to you;

Good luck.

Uninstall GFWL and then re-install it via this installer:

I could not change the compatibility of LaunchGTAIV.exe but instead changed the compatability of GTAIV.exe to Win ME. Now I get the securom 2000 error and I've tried reinstalling the 3.5 framework but it hasn't helped.
Thanks guys but all your solutions don't seem to work.
Oddly enough, the Episodes seems to work just fine.
