GTA: III - Guide for Win 10

Wanted to share this, so anyone on Win 10 should get game started without problems...

First of all, make sure your STEAM GAME INSTALLING DIRECTORY is something else like:

C:\Games\[Steam directories]

Many problems can occur if you have installed your games under "C:\Program Files (x86)\ ... " since Windows somehow thinks there may be "suspicious files" under there. Security mumbo-jumbo indeed. This is essential especially for modding.

So!

Secondly make sure your gta3.exe has these settings under "C:\Games\steamapps\common\Grand Theft Auto 3"

- Right click "gta3.exe"
- Under compability tab, check:
-> Run this program in compability mode / "Windows XP Service pack 3"
-> Check also "run as administaror"

Hit "Confirm", then "OK"

Now you should be able to start game from steam.

First time you run it, it will ask you to install "Direct Play"-feature on your system. Just click ok and voila! Game should start running after this procedure.

Actually you may notice how dim the main menu is.

So first go to...

-Options -> Display settings -> [Change brightness to max] ; [Change draw distance to max]

Remember to set resolution for comfortable level as well. Mine is 1920x1080x16 + Wide screen - setting on

This will change things more comfortable level for eye's (Aargh my eye's burns) d:

And final step: Hit start! And have fun! :D

hey, I'm still having trouble with this, i still get the can't find the 640x480 resolution to stop showing up. i tried changing the actual resolution on my screen to no effect. Do i have to download the silent patch? I tried what you said and still didn't work. I really want to play it. the same issue keeps popping up

Navigate to "...\steamapps\common\Grand Theft Auto 3"
->Right click "gta3.exe"
->Select "Properties"
->Under compability tab check "Run in 640 x 480 screen resolution" as well.
->"Apply"
->"OK"

Try launching game now. Hopefully this works. :)

I have a problem with the game, when i try open the game a new window with i need 8.1 directX need but i have directx12 i have a problem if i install the 8.1 directX? Thanks

Sorry to hear that. I did like I explained in first place and got the game working.

Can you help me? I have a trouble with the game screen: It has a (distorted) image when I load a game file (It also happened the first time I started a new file, but then got corrected by restarting the game).
The image is kind of trasnparent, but it clutters AF.
(Sorry for grammar mistakes)

Try to select options from main menu
Then (yes it was tough for my eyes as well) select video
[Change brightness to max] ; [Change draw distance to max]

-start the game
-play little bit, save
-go back to options and switch brightness and draw distance to performance comfortable level.

Now menus are no more transparent. Tips above helped me out. Because different PC:s/Laptops runs on different components differences may occur.

Be sure to run these tips on Win10! These may work on different OS as well, but hey, every PC/Laptop setup is unique as they have different parts and components installed! Don't really know answers for 32-bit Win10, but usually 64-bit is compatible with most softwares coded on 32-bit architecture!
They are two different architectures, (even while OS is same: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/64-bit_computing#32-bit_vs_64-bit)

Try installing DirectX 8.1 libraries from here:

I know its in nederlands, but hey! It's official site.

And yes! You can change language from drop-down menu! Somehow there's no english version available.

Hey man since it looks like you know what you're doing, i'd liek to ask you something.
I'm searching for some help, I've been killing this game on ps2 and now on pc, but i wanna mess around a bit, I'm trying to make the "Ultimate Trainer" to work, i tried V3 and V3.5
They are not working, they can generate the normal cheats, but can't do their exclusive feature
I'm running on Windows 10 as well, V1.1 ofc. And i deactivated DEP for gta 3
Yet some of the trainer's features crashes my game with unhandled exceptions.
Can you help me ?

It depends on game version... still, I would not recommend trainers or unofficial .dll fixes for any games, since they could change registry values / scripts in bad way.


Once had a good pc, now it rusts somewhere dark with a mad motherboard.

The version is 1.1 as i said in my commentary.
You are right, trainers are always messy in a way, but in this case it's not doing anything.
So yeah... if you can't help me that's fine, i bought this game on 2 platforms, i'm not gonna stop playing it just for that.

Thanks, already had, i enjoyed this game for years now, i just got it recently on pc
