Free to play?
Hi, will this game be free to play anytime soon? I thought of the age of the game and the lack of RO players visiting the servers now might be a good time.

Why would they go free to play? The game would have no free to play monetisation.

Just because the game has a low population isnt a reason for them to make it free. Also, there are still a decent enough number of players to be able to find a server.

A free to play system would make it more expensive to play that the current system
The Tripwire VICE PRESIDENT himself said that the game can be free someday. This is the man who sweated over RO1 years ago as a UT mod, who put his blood into it, and he said it could happen. Please take some time to post on the tripwire forum at the link I will post below and encourage them to make the game free!

"Well, the versions of the mod are still around - they were always "freeware". And maybe we will do that for RO: Ostfront one day!

I was trying to remember the dates as well. Yes, I think the first mod (just checked on Wayback Machine) was released 10/10/03. Wow."

I personally think it would make good dollars and cents simply because Ro1 probably brings in a few hundred to barely over a thousand in revenue a year as it stands, but as a promotional, free tool it could motivate many thousands in sales for other Tripwire products and RO2+Risingstorm,etc.

Making Ro1 free at this point actually arguably makes the best sense. Letting a perfectly good game languish does not make good sense; turning it into a marketing tool wrapped in a gift box is a better idea.

I bought the game but I see no reason why they shouldn't make it free

its more why should they make it free. Even if RO only sells 1 copy a year that earns more than nothing. You can argue it might drive sales of RO2 or RS2 but its a risk and it could even deter people

I recall something about one of the dh devs saying if RO went free, the sky is the limit on what they could accomplish with dh. Even go standalone so Ro is not required anymore.

But dont quote me on that.
Going free really is the way to go imho, it will likely sell more copies of Killing Floor, Ro2, Rising Storm and other Tripwire titles than it will at this point RO1 ever generate in revenue on its own.

The other route, which is also perfectly reasonable, is to throw Ro1 into game bundles constantly. Humble Bundle, Bundle Stars, and other outfits constantly have amazing bundles and I and others have acquired many (most?) of our games over the last several years through bundling services. Ro1 has been in a HB and there's no reason it can't be again. Get it thrown into a Humble Monthly as a bonus and we'll have thousands of new players. Doing nothing with the game tho is a shame, I wish they'd either constanlty put it on sale/bundle or otherwise go free.

DH devs have been working on a standalone title for years called Festung Europa. They have most of the team working on it, but there hasn't been much news lately. A smaller team takes care of DH as of now.

+1

Own the game from day one and also think F2P would be a awesome idea as it would revive this wonderful and revolutional gem, enlarge the general RO/RS community, thus also create influx for TWI newer games for sure.

I don't think it will change anything besides the playerbase. Making F2P will make no difference.
