This is a pretty old game, are there still plenty of players? Could my Mac run this game decently? Also, would you say this game is more arcade(ish) or is it somewhat realistic?

It's got more European players do they are active earlier in Eastern Standard Times day. Except for the sniperfest that seems active all the time. The bots here are also fairly good if you play solitaire. On Fridays the Poles have a fight night that is often using this game. The Real Panzer group has also settled here.

Darkest Hour is a free mod installable through Steam which gets more active players than Ro1 these days, and it has recently added Ro1 maps and the Soviet army, and you get subtle improvements like mortars, shotguns, etc..

The problem with Darkest Hour is that there's no offical servers everythings community driven. I tried to join a few servers and i had to download a million different things.

It's almost played by European players but, in Darkest Hour (one of the most popular mods for this game) has a pretty big community compared to the base game.
