achievements problem

I'm not getting some achievements, so I tried clicking on the achievements doll but it didn't work (main menu screen showing five dolls: Continue game; Start new game; Acheivements; Help & options; Exit). All the other options work.
When I point my mouse to click on Achievements the dolls stack up; when I click on it there is just a clicking sound, and then the dolls all show as unstacked again.
I was going to blame Steam for the lack of achievements, but as I can't access them in the game there may be more to it?
Any suggestions? Thanks
UPDATE: Tried in game also: pressed Escape, and clicked on the achievements button - again nothing happened.
I have now completed 100% on main game, and am missing 9 of those achievements (not including DLC whichI haven't finished yet).

I've 100% the game but I'm missing the 'Well trained traveler acheivement'
