NOTE: Please buy the 'Wrath of the Lamb' DLC if you're going to get this. It will make TBoI a million times better, and will allow you to update the game to get the Hard Mode.
With randomly generated dungeons for every playthrough and a top down dungeon crawling experience in the same vein of the original Zelda trilogy, The Binding of Isaac is a roguelike game that can be picked up for less than a dollar and provides hours and hours of fun on end.
Following Isaac, a young boy who is trying to defeat his murderous mother after almost getting killed by her, TBoI has hundreds of items, ranging from the cutest of fashion accessories to the most grotesque parasites and diseases. With a randomisation system that makes no two playthroughs the same, TBoI is an adventure, a big step forward in the world of indie gaming, and ultimately, you'll have a hell of a time playing it.
My criticisms with the game are that it's impossible to predict what items you're going to get, and while this adds to the mystery, this also means you can become obscenely OP or obscenely UP and it can become frustrating having to play through with what could be called a dead weight on your leg, which combined with the VERY steep learning curve, makes for a frustrating time with some playthroughs.
Nonetheless, with a game that you can pick up for $5 or less, where can you go wrong? I highly reccommend TBoI, and if you like it, go pick up the remake, The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth!
