Use WASD to move and arrow keys to shoot, don't get hit by red stuff. There is a secret room on every floor. Use a bomb to open it. it has to be surounded by 3 or 4 rooms. Hard to explain Good luck

always leave one enemy in the room to practice how to dodge them. dodging is the best thing for this game. if you cant dodge enemies you wont make it far in this game

Take your time on each floor to be thourough, there is no timer pushing you towards the exit. For example, if there is an arcade room (with a blood bank in the right left corner of said room), and you have a lot of hearts scattered in the stage, exchange all of them for money. It might seem like a waste of time, but it will not be detrimental to you anyway, and the money ca&n always be useful to get more from shop, arcades or beggars.

Unless you are very low on bombs or keys (or both), open the golden chests. They almost always pay out.

Learn how to shoot diagonaly. It's kinda hard to pull off at first, but it'll help you immensly in a lot of rooms (even on early floors).

@Op, in addition to what Evil and Ko1 said, as a beginner I recommend focusing on learning enemy behavior and resource management. It's also a good idea to not totally clear floors at first, to just get the treasure room and go to the boss if you know where it is.

I'd say before womb if you are a total beginner you have to clear every room to be succsessful. Womb n after you should rush to boss if you don't feel confident, that true.
As I said in other topic, don't be afraid to sacrifice normal hearts/heart conntainers for a chance of good item. It's almost always worth it.

As a beginner indeed if you don't feel confident enough, you can just try to rush the floors doing as little rooms as possible. Still without leaving behind the most important ones, i.e. item rooms and shops.
For such a "speed run" strat, the compass is a huge help, since it will allow locate the main rooms. So pay a visit to the shop if you can afford it, it has good chances to be there.
This is as already said even more to be applied for the womb when you unlock it, since you have no item room there and enemies deal double damage, so you can just boss rush.

The more experience you get, the less this "speed run" strat will be interesting though, because you miss lots of pickups and other potential great stuff (items with beggars etc.) The more you master the game the more you will want to explore every corner of every floor for that reason, even in the womb (where you have good chance to stumble upon a beggar or two), and even more when you'll have the D6 for isaac where reroll/recharge optimization strat will come in.

For other tips, I would recommend you to always take a peak inside the curse room, if you can afford it. You have the curse room (spikes on door) and the self-sacrifice room (spikes on the floor). The self-sacrifice room is almost never worth it, you can skip it all the time. But the curse room on the other hand, can be extremely amazing: soul hearts, pills, deal with the devil/angel items. Go inside as often as you can.

Searching for secret and super secret rooms will also be of a great help. you can bomb your way in, there is only one of each on each floor.
Secret rooms are adjacent to 3 or 4 other rooms most of the time. rather 3 than 4 actually. The item "the map" will show you its location.
Super secret rooms on the other hand can only be in contact with one room, and this room cannot be a special room (boss, item, shop etc.). This excludes the secret room that does not count strictly as a real room, so it can be adjacent to it. This is why sometimes if the secret room is adjacent to only two rooms, the super secret room will not be far.

Nope, as I said if you aren't spending soul hearts on it it's worth it.
Actually it's never worth it to skip any room before the womb(I do the said ''speed running'' to make the game harder) n after usually too. You gotta remember than in Wotl 1 item can make the run from ''okay'' to ''impossible to lose'' and you can find this 1 item in any room.

lol no it is not. well to be very precise, it is, only if you have no other room in which sacrificing your hearts instead, and to the point where you do not put your run at risk.
In other words, ANY other room (blood bank, devil beggar, curse room) is better sacrificing your hearts than the self-sacrifice room.
Once you have done all other rooms and still have some spare red hearts, then indeed you can give it a shot.
And still, the reward - if you get any that is - is almost always absolute trash. You almost always never get back half what you sacrificed. Self sacrifice room is by far the worst room, and is usually not even worth stopping by. I think everyone can agree on that (except you maybe?^^)

I think that would be a good idea to improve it a bit for rebirth that said. make the item apparition chance bigger for instance. This would give better interest to the room.
