I can't seem to beat this game i've reached mom like once so far and I am at about 100 losses so far. Anyone have any tips or ideas or am I destined to never beat this game?

Don't worry I only defeated mom after 69 deaths and it took me 180 deaths to unlock all the endings. I'm currently at 230 something deaths and I still can't beat this game with certain characters. Best thing to do is research. There are hundreds of items and trinkets in this game and knowing what each of them does helps tremendously. Knowing how to find secret rooms and secret secret rooms are helpful too. If not, always use your bombs on tinted rocks. Usually it will give you souls heart.

As a beginner, soul hearts are your best friends. No matter how bad you are, having dozens of soul hearts is a instant win. Try to get as many of them as possible (again, tinted rocks) and just tank mom. Later, you will be skilled enough to invest your hearts for deals with Devil or find secret rooms easy enough to always have enough money for shops. Right now, just focus on getting soul hearts or eternal hearts.

IF all this fails, get Cain ASAP, if you don't have him already. Best character to become a soul heart tank. A single dice room or a Fortune Teller machine will garantee you a victory. i personally unlocked all 14 endings with just Cain. Never used any other character. Get him, he will make you rich, tanky and happy.

Well that's my advice. Just play a lot and you'll get there. Good luck, have fun

I'm curious - what strategy do you use? Do you take devil deals? Have you tried playing as various characters? Do you have the WotL expansion? And most importantly, do you explore the whole floor before going to the next? Experimentation, I find, is the best path to discovering a victorious way of playing. I highly recommend it. Oh, and when in doubt, Let's-players are good demonstrators.

Well I have the expansion and I usually play cain. I also take most devil items and I usually avoid the curse room. Although I don't explore the whole floors I usually just search for the gold room then go to the next area soon as possible.

Out of what you said last, I would say...Cain is a good choice, I wouldnt take devil deals all that often at all, and you should totally explore the whole floor before moving on. It gives you a chance to stock up on bombs/keys/coins if nothing else.

get flying that helps a lot to survive even the hardest rooms... deal with the devil and angel rooms have few options.. also the noose from secret room item pool. not sure if you can go guppy in the beginning but that is also a great option. Curse rooms have a chance to give devil room items+ guppy items.. and it's best to leave them for the end of the level when there are extra red hearts lying around.. so clear a floor. go curse room and pick up health back before venturing forth

Ah, I think I see your problem.

Firstly, Cain starts with very low health, so I wouldn't take more than one devil deal unless you get a lot (a LOT) of HP up or balls pills. Second, Blasterson is right - you want as many resources as you can get as Cain, especially since you get all good pills, so exploring will pay off, including curse rooms and shops, which often contain pills...so do some mini-boss rooms. If you're good at dodging, exploring will help much more than it will hurt, especially since Cain is fast. Good luck!

One more tip, some people get confused...curse rooms are the ones with spikey doors and have red chests and occasional free devil items. The ones with a regular door and spikes in the middle are sacrifice rooms...those rooms suck, don't bother with them.

I'd say you want to get cain he is a beast if you don't already have him, beat the game first try with him. GAMBLE YOUR HEART OUT IN GAMEROOMS.

Whenever you get a chance to enter the devil's room, always get spirit of the night, that item has helped me numerous times throughout my runs. Try to look for secret rooms, do not open golden chests with your keys (save them for treasure rooms) and save up your explosives for tinted rocks as they will give you soul hearts.

Another good fundamental is to ALWAYS put out fires and destroy the poop piles in all rooms all the time. It can be tedious at times but you can usually count on them for a coin/heart or two per floor.

Sacrifice Rooms are actually pretty helpful, if you got an invincibility granting item. Run over the spikes while invincible, guaranteed golden chest. I once got Sad Onion on a Poly Brimstone Run from a Sacrifice Room's Golden Chest. It was the best day of my life.

Well yeah, sacrifice rooma can be ok maybe, but only if you can afford it. they pay out too infrequently to risk a run on.
i have killed mother after 10 plays :D the best way for me is to play other rougelikes and train your dexterity

Know your items, take your time in runs.

I finally beat mom! I had the cancer trinket and a bunch of other attack buffs with moms bra and I managed to kill her in the 5 seconds she was stunned. Before that my last to runs actually both ended when fighting to her. Thanks for all the tips they really did help. btw I played some more since but I think it took me 110-120 deaths before I could win.

Thats awesome to hear! I bet your heart was racing! I know mine was the first time I beat Mom.
