How do the laser tripwires work?

I swear I walked through one and it didn't go off, but most of the time it does?

I know some people enjoy learning by playing, but I find the lack of a detailed manual frustrating, especially given the abstract nature of the mechanics. I'd like a list of every icon/object in the game and how it works. I don't want a strategy guide, I just want an explanation of the mechanics of the game.

There are 2 types of lasers. Thin and Solid. Thin lasers will shift from red to gray. You can safely pass them while they're gray. Solid ones look a bit thicker than the thin lasers and do not change colors. Sweeping lasers never change colors.

For thin tripwires, there's two cases where you'll walk through it and it won't activate.
* Periodically it turns white [off], then flickers between off and on, then on. When off or flickering you can walk through it and it won't set off.
* When you have just come from another floor, you're flickering. During this time you're invisible/invulnerable and can't trip wires.

For thick tripwires, there's a short period of time after it turns back on where it won't set off. It doesn't flicker or anything, it just doesn't set off.
