I got this game as part of a bundle awhile ago and just found it in my library. When I first fired it up, it reminded me a lot of Freelancer in terms of graphics and feel. Which is great, except that Freelancer is from 2003, and this game is from 2008, so the graphics are terrible by that standard.
This game focuses almost exclusively on trading with a few FPS missions thrown in. You have a few other side missions you can do (acquire goods for someone for a potential payout later). Each of the spaceports lets you wander around and explore, and there's hidden side missions and goodies at every port (some require a bit of platforming as well). Unfortunately, you can't actually fly your ship. You choose where you want to travel, and you're there. No space flight at all, which is a major disappointment.
The FPS missions remind me of the oldschool shooters where the guns, health and shields were just lying around the map for you to pick up. Unfortunately you can't buy any kind of upgrades to help you with these FPS missions, you basically learn the maps and go get the guns/health/shields before the boss arrives. This is probably the weakest aspect of the game, but at least it pays well and is the fastest way to earn cash and loot to sell for more cash.
Overall, not a terrible game, but definitely has its issues, especially with how repetitive it gets since you basically do the same few things the entire game (do FPS missions initially to buy all the cargo capacity upgrades, then travel around hauling the highest profit goods). The exploration and side missions in the ports help relieve some of the tedium, but I really wish I could actually use my money to buy more than just goods and more cargo space.
I tentatively recommend this game simply because it's cheap and relatively fun if you like trading style games and it brings back the nostalgia of the classic space games that have been largely neglected for the last decade.
