As a cinematic experience, LA Noire is very good. It has a stack of content, compelling stories, great voice acting and revolutionary facial animation. It tackles challenging themes in a mature manner. It offers a large area to explore, built with great attention to detail.
As a game...it's a mixed bag. The distractions - driving, shooting, tailing and collecting items - are nothing special. The core is the investigation - searching for clues and interrogating witnesses/suspects. The former is decent, with helpful difficulty options. The latter has its moments, both good and keyboard-smashingly bad.
Two examples. A witness is asked about a document found in the possession of somebody else. There is no reason to be sure, or even reasonably suspect, that she is aware of it. When she denies knowledge of it, an appropriate choice response would seem to be "Doubt". According to the game, it's "Lie" - even though her response seems to confirm that she was unaware of it, making the "Lie" a strange choice. Even worse, there is another situation where you are expected to select "Lie", when the actual lie arises from the response to your challenge upon choosing "Lie"!
The single checkpoint save is also frustrating. Realise you made a mistake (seeing witness in a certain order cuts out a possible question in an early mission, for instance) or encounter a mission-breaking bug after a checkpoint save, and you have to go back to the very beginning - 30+ mins of unskippable dialogue and driving.
There's also port issues - a woeful 30fps, graphical pop-in and the like.
For all that...it's still a compelling experience. As much as it annoys me, I keep coming back. It may require a new keyboard by the end, but it'll be worth it.
