So in this game you pay as a legal criminal who works to take out the competition who don't have the same backing of the government. Okay... in all seriousness the player character is (mostly) a decent guy, but your fellow policemen tend to be either bitter, corrupt, or narrow-minded. And while the last of those makes sense for the 1940's, it still ensured that my opinion of police in this game is more or less what it is IRL: a handful of good people in a sea of jerks who are no better than the people they throw in jail.
Anyway... gamey. You search crime scenes for things, interrogate people about the things you find, and sometimes shoot people since these are American police and they like to do that sort of thing. Though at least in this case all the people you are forced to shoot tend to be firing back at you, so I guess that's justifiable. While the gameplay isn't broken, it just... didn't work for me. I was bored alot of the time and the game choosing to rate my performance promoted save scumming and looking for guides rather than working things out for myself. And while I suppose it is my fault for deciding to skip the "fun" of figuring out things for myself, I just felt uninterested and wanted to be done with it all...
...well, until the late parts of the game, when things heat up and interesting plot stuff actually starts happening. And while the final level is a bit absurd by being a massive gunfight and a rushed ending with alot of unresolved messes, at least the stuff before it was interesting and kept me wanting to see where things would end up.
I'm not sure about this game. It felt really long and the first half was profoundly lacking in excitement. I suppose that would be realistic: most police stuff is samey and boring I expect. But the "realism" here came at the cost of fun, and I could barely play more than a case at a time before I had to go do something else to entertain myself.
But it's not a bad game. It's just not for me. I'll give this a "yes" because it works, does get better later on, and that there is no "maybe" option on Steam and I don't dislike this game enough to give it a "no".
Yey... now I can do something else. x_x
