Alan Wake in library but can't play it nor remove it [SOLVED]
A friend of mine has Alan Wake in her library but she can't play it because instead of "Play" all she sees is "Purchase". Well, in fact that's not a problem because she NEVER bought it so she doesn't expect to be able to play it.
Fact is she can't remove it from her library because when she tries to do that Steam says something like "Alan Wake will be deleted but it will remain into your library and if you want to play again you have to download it again". That's a funny paradox.
Is this a game-related problem? How can she permanently delete that obviously incorrect link from her library? Thank you for your support on this! I've also contacted Steam support but since they're usually not very quick in replying I thought you guys could best help me.

Hey first of all if you are certainly sure your "FRIEND" has not purchased the game then there are only few possible explinations , games that appear in your library without purchasing are almost always games that are free for a certain duration like a Weekednd Sale on steam ,however seeing that this is a recent title i highly doubt that , also its more likely someone possibly one of your freinds friend who possibly owns a copy of Alan Wake probably logged into his/her steam account from your friends PC which would intiate an download on her machine, since that person would log out to let someone else log in with there account they would probably not be able start the game . Again im trying to explain this based on your feed back .
Hope this helped.
P.S. if youd just rather see the game removed you could always remove steam and re install it !!!(but that would be like using a grenade to kill a mosquito)

I asked ans apparently this is exactly what happened. His brother installed the game on her PC and played it a couple of time. Well, now I know why this happened. It's something, thank you! But the problem's still there...

Ouch man! That's more like a f****ng napalm bomb against that mosquito... I'd really like not to have to do this (primarly because she knows nothing about PC and I'd have to handle the backup/uninstall/re-install processes...

Ok glad to see that helped solve the mystrey , i can suggest a workaround but its not a permanent fix , ok try this :-

1. Log into steam till you reach your games library where you can see alan wake listed.
2. Right Click it and select the option "Create Category" or "Select Category".
3. In the new window name a new category like e.g. "NOT MINE" (Name whatever you like)
4. Click create and now youll see Alan Wake in a new category tab by the name you used in step 3.
5. Now simply click the " - " (minus) sign next to the category to hide the games in it.

Like i said this is a workaround , there is no permanent solution to this as far as i know .

HOPE THIS HELPED !!!
(I am going to poke around and see if there is a better solution , ill let you know if i find something)

DO NOT UNINSTALL STEAM!!! IT WILL ALSO UNINSTALL ALL YOUR GAMES!!!
What you can try is - remove everything from your steam catalogue except for those:
-steam.exe file
-steamapps catalogue
Now start steam which will autoupdate.

Hey found a better way of hiding although cant specifiy how this is stil "HIDING" ok do this :-
1. Right click Alan wake and see whether its already in your "FAVORITES" .
2. If it is remove it from your favorites. If it isnt then leave it be.
3. Now you have to add all the reamaining games to your "FAVORITES" by right clicking on them just like before.
5. Now in your steam interface just underneath "STORE" youll see the option "All Games" highlighted by default click on that and choose "FAVORITES" .
6. Thats it now steam will just show you games in the favorite list and since you removed Alan Wake from that list or never added to it it would not appear.

I am pointing out this method because if you go by the previous method the game will rea appear if you change to "THUMBNAIL VIEW" or "TILE VIEW" for games regardless of what category it is in , but this way it would not appear in Tumbnail view.

P.S. I am pretty sure anyone whose installed or uninstalled anything obviously knows that if you uninstall a client like steam it will uninstall all services(GAMES) automatically too. If you did not no that than thank you "SWENOR" for pointing it out , but im sure you new that already .
I think you know this already but everytime your friends brother tries to play the game on her PC itll re install the whole game , not to mention also eat up your Internet bandwith , its better to simply hide it than to remove it and then re install it later thats my suggestion. Hope i helped you with this.

Try going into the Steam program folder where Alan Wake is downloaded, right click the Steam icon and then click "open file location", then go to steamapps/common. Manually delete the Alan Wake folder from that and it should be off of the computer. Also remove appmanifest_108710.acf from your appdata folder to be safe.

Solved. She had a 7Gb+ "Alan Wake" folder in her Steam\steamapps one. Deleted it and now her library is OK. Thank you guys.
