Good game, but combat is too hard
I like the game's story and atmosphere, but damn, the combat is just brutal. I've gotten up to chapter 4 or so, and it seems that now I'm getting ambushed by mobs of 3-4 bad guys around every corner. I can't run because they move faster than me, they kill me in 2-3 hits, and if I try to focus on one of them the others attack me from behind. What were they thinking? This is seriously lowering my enjoyment of the game. I want a good horror story, not stupidly difficult combat all the time.

You're not the first one annoyed by the game's difficulty. I personally found the game to be fairly easy on Nightmare, but I'm not the common gamer though.

You should try disorienting mobs by briefly pointing your flashlight at them every 5-10s (it doesn't work on the big guys though). If you do it right, they'll have a hard time getting to you before you reach the next safe haven.

Trying to enjoy it but man...in a game without a save game function, restarting from the last checkpoint so you can do "take 2" or "take 3" of the pile-on game with the Taken is getting old...beautiful and atmospheric tho'.

I tried pointing the flashlight at them to disorient them, but they are only stunned for a second or so, then charge into me again. I'm getting to the point where I'm facing 2-3 big guys together with 3 more little guys at the same time. I eventually manage to get through, but it's starting to feel like luck more than skill, and I have to retry a lot. And I'm only playing on normal difficulty... I really think they went overboard with the difficulty here.

I personally found the game to be fairly easy on Nightmare

Really? I read a guide about getting through Nightmare difficulty, out of curiosity, and it sounds really tedious and frustrating. They say it takes three times the amount of light and ammo to deal with enemies, what's the point? Just for a few extra manuscript pages? No thanks.

Don't always try to stay and fight, sometimes its better to just get your a** out of there and run for the next light(s) Also keep those f*ckers away from you! When you're running from them; run a bit then turn around and focus light on the ones catching up (hold down right click, but you should know that ), then run a bit again. Also if you can try to shoot the ones closest to you; now normally these are gonna be the little guys with the curved knife. They are the fastest and its best to deal with them swiftly. Then run a bit again. Turn around see what you are dealing with (repeat) and continue. Always keep moving.

game is hard but the story make it worth the struggle.

im dieing a bit on normal difficulty but im not finding it too hard of a challenge, the big objects are worse than the taken.
be sure to wave that flashlight around as ur traveling along because theres alot of hidden ammo/tools chests around in the later chapters. just gotta keep your eye out and sometimes explore a little before going to the next objective.
also keep an ear out for that little noise it makes when u shine ur light on the hidden messages, iv found a few hidden chests by hearing that noise as i was just randomly moving my flashlight around.

After a while I lowered down the mouse sensitivity which helped a little in some situation by making the flashlight easier to aim properly.

The worst part is when you die from just one or two hits....T_T

But,

It's one of the best games I've played and is defiantly worth finishing. I'm doing the specials now, and dang, they can be pretty hard. I say if it gets too hard for you, do one of to things: Keep trying, you'll get though it sooner or later, (That’s how I did it.) or stop for the day take a break and try again later.

Well, I like challenge in games, so I play all of them on the hardest difficulty available (except Unreal Tournament). I'm still waiting to try Dark Souls :p

Just keep your flashlight moving around and let them get close and crack a flare and finish them off.

You need to strategize. The combat was by no means easy, but it was a fair challenge. Some times, it would just take long time to get done with especially when I need to conserve ammo, cause I would use my flashlight tactically then.

Basically, use your flashlight until their top layer "peels" away. Then finish them off with a few rounds.

Right-click to stun them with the flashlight, run a ways, turn, stun again, run again. And get good at "dodging" their attack with the Run key, it gets easier with practice. don't be shy about changing batteries, even on Nightmare you usually have plenty.

When they're ganging up on you, use a flare to back them off, run to the next safe area. It does take time to get the combat down, I died a lot on my first play through. My second playthrough on Nightmare was easier than my first on what-the-hell-am-I-doing.

His run stamina is really low too :( He is worse than me when I used to smoke. When he is struck, it disorients everything too. I like the game so far, but I also find it difficult.

I also found Normal difficulty particularly hard, so I finished the main game on easy, which is still decently challenging. I wanted to enjoy the story without having the atmosphere destroyed by having to retry the same levels over and over ad nauseam. I also found it impossible to get past the first fight in The Signal DLC on normal.

I've found Normal to be doable except for Lovers' Peak and the part after the hedge maze. NICE JOB LOSING THE KEYS, BARRY.
