Starpoint Gemini

Starpoint Gemini

Quite disappointed...
I'm all for space RPGS like Dark-Star one and Space-force RU, So I though this game would be amazing!
First go playing it not long after a tutorial, here is my rage story:

I just get back from the ghost sector after saving Ridley, and suddenly two rouge ships come out of nowhere and attack me, with my fore shield down, i call for help and the two ships that came back with me attempt to help, my shields go down, i put up a fight and im dead. Im thinking it was just a random occurrence so I load up the save game and continue playing. Made it to the space station this time, pick up two quest to salvage cargo and upgraded my gun, head over to the first darlek ship and get attacked, this if fine, i fight the rouge off and some greenships come passed and give me a hand, (easy battle) scan for cargo, get cargo then head on my way to the other darlek ship. Find another loan rouge on the way, the fine attack him and destroy him. Keep approaching the darlek ship and suddenly two rouges appear out of nowhere, expecting this I have my shields up and weapons all charged up. Unfortunately they destroy my shields and my weapons dont do ♥♥♥♥ all to them, leaving me to turn tale and run, but they just gun me down trying to escape.

Anyone who plays this game, what am i doing wrong? is there like some kind of patch to fix this? I started the game on ensign thinking it'd be a nice casual space shootem up RPG, but i can even survive more than 15mins.

//end rage story.

Had a 3rd try at it, attacked on the way to the station again, managed to destroy them with a bit of help, get myself a mission, no new weapons that will fit my ship this time... oh well, I head out to get the cargo off the darlek ship, and damn, two ships show up twice the size of me, kill my shields and drop my health to 1/4 and disable my engines in one hit, so how exactly are we meant to play this game...

idk at the beginning i didnt try to fight 2v1 ever b/c i died. Whenever i went out to the astroid fields and a pirate ship came after me (this is at the beginning of the game) i would power power up speed and run toward the station. The one thing you gotta do tho is target the systems on the other ship like thrusters. A ship wont be able to chase you if their thursters are dead.

Bit of a shaky start, but im enjoying it now, just at the start of the game you have to be carefull as hell =]

Yes, you are very squishy in the beginning of the game. As long as you have the Taurus beginner ship, or another gunship class ship, I wouldn't recommend going up against more than 1 at a time unless you're confident that the distress call skill willl be available.
Going 1 v 1 on bigger ships is actually pretty easy with a small ship like the Taurus. Since the bigger ships have lower maneuverability and speed than you, they won't be able to turn on you, if you make sure to stay behind them. If you target their thrusters and manage to drain all their health, they'll be a VERY easy target as turning will be virtually impossible for them. Your only weakness will be 360 degree weapons, 180 degree side weapons or ships that have attack drones.

As for some ships immediately trashing your burner, it's probably a ship ability. There's one which immediately kills/temporarily disables the thruster on enemy target.

Also, the loading screen provides some useful tips at times. One I really liked said that it is better to have a lower class ship with better equipment, than a higher class ship with worse equipment. Try to keep this in mind if you're considering buying a new ship.

Good luck!

I feel your pain as my life in Starpoint Gemini began much the same way. But after I finally learned to run away, I just circled the first system looking for cheeky makeup boxes to destroy or non-mission wrecks to loot. I think I made 2 passes around the place before I had enough to buy a destroyer. Man, my life got so much easier. I'm still hating on the interface though. I like where it's going but I should be able to target things much more easily and from farther distances. I shouldn't have to click each product to get prices. They should also put the keyboard shortcuts in a mouseover bubble. Maybe a simple trade ledger to help you keep track of prices and such. Tweaks to the Interface aside, I think that Starpoint Gemini is a good starting point. It needs vocal diversity to the background chatter (Though I do love that guy's voice), a bit more accessible interface, and a slightly more robust trading system. It reminds me of the original Mount and Blade game. A good mod could put this game squarely in the awesome category.

Initially I had the same problem. Try to avoid hostile sectors at first. Keep harvesting credits and equipment in the safest part of space and do not advance the storyline too fast. Also, searching for derelicts is a great way to salvage expensive stuff. Once you level up and obtain command over at least frigate class ship, then proceed to your fame

Oh, another hint...when attacking pirates or merchant ships, use boarding. It succeeds many times and you get an entire ship intact
Yep, Vo should be better for a sequel, cause I've seen on youtube and some forums, the graphics have improved awesomely fot that type of game, I've been reading it'll be full 3d and with more testing and GUI tweaks it should be quite a game, the weird appeal to the idea and story of the game, combined with polishing, it'll be a nice one. There's a forum over at spacesimcentral, and reading through it, they've taken into account practically everything I've been reding here, so let's hope they make the best of it.

Is this the game where you suddenly end up gazing off in one direction while you're trying to fly your ship? If it is, it's total♥♥♥♥♥♥

Yes, yes I think it is!

First of all, it has been over a year since I finished Starpoint Gemini, and I remember it was rather fun and engaging game. True, there were bugs but I never encountered any game stopping bug. In response to janruzowitzky, there is even faster way to earn money - pick up and solve random missions. Some of them are simple and allow for quick grab of money and experience.
RPG system is rather well implemented, as well as management of your ship's systems. Voiceovers are not so brilliant but music is just awesome.
I would definitely recommend this game to all space genre junkies and all those that like open world sandbox games, because this game is truly large in size. In the last couple of weeks I have been monitoring the development of sequel to this game and it seems upgrades are very very significant. In fact, if it weren't for the name, I would never guessed it to be a sequel.

Just to note, I loved this game once i got past its short comings =]

the camera does pan to show your target... so if thats what you mean, yes. try using your scroll wheel or so to scroll out a bit more if possible and you might have better luck piloting while fighting in asteroid fields etc... more of a top down view is helpful.
