Just bought it and can't get started

I just bought this game and loaded it - and when I start it my mouse cursor actually indicates (in the game) about 5cm above where the mouse points to (is at) on-screen. In other words, when I am on the intro menu, when the blue light highlights 'Load' my mouse is apparently pointing at 'Credits', and I can't actually get the blue highlight on Credits or Exit. Any ideas on how I can actually get my mouse pointing at where it's supposed to? (I'm on a Windows 8 laptop.)

What systems are you using? XP, Vista, 7 (32-bit or 64 bit)?

Windows 8. I tried doing what one of the guys suggested (drilling down into the menus) but it didn't work.

Hell I guess I should be grateful. I can at least have the pleasure of spending an hour in the tutorial despite it crashing if I do anything not-tutorial. W7 here. My buddy on W8 plays no problem, so this is troubling.
