Should I OverClock?
I currently have a I-5 3570k clocked at 3.40. Last week I overclocked my CPU to 4.2 - 4.4 and each time I did it and played Arma 3 it crashed. Not on the spot, but a few minutes into the game. I ajusted the voltage and got the same result. I was getting 75-80C with prime95 CPU strest tester, and i have a Hyper evo 212. Any form of help or advice would be awesome. Also should I leave my CPU at a normal 3.40? Thanks!

Those temps are really unacceptable for a 4.2/4.4ghz overclock. If you're still unstable at those clock speeds and temperatures, then you just can't push any further. Do you need to? That really depends on what graphics card you have. I have a Radeon 5870 HD and at the settings I use I require my 4.6Ghz overclock on my i7 3770k in order to max out my GPU usage. If I go back to stock I still get good framerates but I start to bottleneck my GPU slightly (granted I am playing at standard settings, this would be totally different if I upped the graphics settings.)

If you have a lower end GPU, like a 4870 or a 285, then no overclocking doesn't matter and you can get away with stock speeds. If you have a higher end GPU than me, chances are you'll be bottlenecking it unless you really up the graphics settings.

Imho, given the temps you're getting at such low clockspeeds, I wouldn't recommend overclocking at all. You shouldn't be hitting 80C with a 212 and only at 4.2/4.4Ghz. Maybe try remounting your cooler and cleaning up the TIM?

Ok thanks, also I have a Gtx 670 Sig 2 modle.

If your game crashes, your CPU overclock is not stable (Obviously) Try putting the multiplier to 40, and keep upping the voltage if you can.

Ok I will try that. Also what would you recomend for voltage? Sorry kinda new at this and youtube isnt helping. :P

got 3770k @4.2 w/ h100. Running arma really well. also try disabling core parking

If you don't mind me asking, what is h100? Sorry for the stupid question.

H100 from what I remember is a water cooling CPU cooler.

Also, I'm hitting 4.2Ghz on my 2500K with the 212 Evo and am getting temps at around 70 C. Is that normal? I've done research and the subject seemed widely debated about what the point of worrying is. I'm thinking of pushing to 4.6Ghz and am not sure if temps are fine.

Even i know thats a little high. Your Cpu should not be going over 85C. So i wouldn't go that high.

70C is high? This is under prime95 blend test...

i would not recomment you to overclock, as the cpu lifetime gets very short and the cpu gets very hot. also games may crash

Yet I'm still here using my CPU to game and have not crashed a single time ever since my overclock.

I have that same CPU and had it overclocked to 4.5 stable on everything *except* ARMA. It made it through 3 stressing programs without crashing but still crashes on this game. Not sure what the deal is but I just leave it at stock clocks for this game.

put some whatercooling on the cpu i got it overclocked at 4.2 an it wont go up than 55 C,
-i7 3770k

Ok, guys i finaly got it to work, kidna. I reaplyed my thermal paste which did help alot. I overclocked it to a nice 4.4 and will go up to 4.5 when i feel i should or need to. I have a steady temp of 59-63c in Prime95 and I play every game I have maxed out and get good frame rate. Not one crash, EXCEPT for two games. Arma 2 and Arma 3. I can not overclock at all without them crashing. So just like Hapi said, i guess im not going to overclock with the Arma series which is disipionting because that is the game that i need it the most.
