Smoke grenades need to be Removed until Optimized And heres WHY
I run at 300 FPS using a i7 7700k with a nivida 1080 gpu with 32gb of ram

I can load over 100 AI troops and not feel any FPS drop, I can do firefights and play just fine with nothing affecting my FPS, Until One thing.... A single smoke grenade.

A single smoke grenade takes me from 300 FPS to 130 FPS...... Thats INSANE! For my friends who dont have major gaming PC's, they can't even handle this stuff, they go from 50 fps down to 15 FPS.

This isn't acceptable in any standard anywhere. Instead of releasing more DLC, or anything else, FOCUS ON OPTIMIZATION!, Nothing in this game should drop your FPS by over 50% NOTHING!!! I'm here complaining for my friends and the hundreds others who all have this issue with extream FPS Drop from little dumb things.

IF you play a King of the hill or a wasteland server, a easy way to win a fight is to throw a smoke grenade behind you, because you'll lag out the enemy so bad they can't shoot back.

1920x1080 on high settings, instead of max. 100% resolution
Issue still remains, game shouldn't drop 50% of its FPS because you use a smoke grenade.

I just did a few tests, with the editor. I made missions with around 100AI in a large firefight......smoke grenades had basically no effect on FPS on my PC.
Maybe you need to have a look at your rig, not at the game.

Do you have FPS Lock on? I'm saying theres a noticeable large FPS drop when a smoke grenade is used. I never drop under anything noticeable, but if it keep on eye on my FPS unlocked, theres a hugely noticable decrease

my FPS isnt locked. Was at a solid 80 FPS, when the fighting got intense it droped to 65. I threw smokes in a few different situations, the FPS didnt move outside of normal variation 5 or so FPS up and down

Not seeing the problem: 17-4790k@4.2GHz, GTX 980, 32 GB RAM, R97-HD3-Gaming MB running ArmA III in 4k.

Like NathaN, I'm getting ~80 FPS in SP with my current High settings and throwing smoke only gives a drop of ~5 FPS... and to get that I have to have 20+ in view at the same time. I usually lock FPS at 60 Hz so it's never usually noticable.

... and we already know that when it comes to MP that there are so many factors that come into play that limits FPS that you can't pin it on any single factor...

Smoke grenades for me are the biggest FPS killer in arma for me, Sometimes 15+ fps drops, So I can agree with OP partially

Particles are calculated on the CPU, like all other particles. That includes rain particles too, ever wonder why your FPS takes a dive in rain? Well thats why. Try a heavy particle creation fight, e.g explosive minigun rounds on the A-10 jet creates hundreds of little particle instances.

whats worse then smoke?

the birds, the snakes, the butterflies...

why? because it moves and everytime it moves it needs to tell everyone playing, HEY A SNAKE IS MOVING ACROSS THE STREET

its an object and every object on the map in MP makes FPS drop

DEVS GET RID OF THE THE BIRDS, SNAKES, AND BUTTERFLIES FOR MORE FPS!!!

Rabbit, snake & butterflies are all CLIENT SIDE ONLY!!! Their positions are not transmitted over the net....

Not totally true
Ambient Animals in maps are only Client side, Unless they are manually placed by mission creators.

So in the end, Snakes, rabbits, butterflies etc do not sync across clients in MP

It can also be disabled by the mission maker
