I want to start off by saying that never before this game have I played any sort of top-down game, let alone a top-down (old-school) RPG like this one, so I hold no nostalgia factor for games like this one. This is from the perspective of a man who has been PC gaming since 2002 (was 10 y/o) and is just introduced to this type of RPGs.
It's very difficult to give a good game a downvote, but even if everything else is done great, if your main mechanic (the combat) is done poorly, then the game loses all it's value and becomes bad and frustrating.
Let's begin with the praises first:
As I mentioned, most aspects of the game are done great, we will start off with the:
The art for the characters is great, when you see emotion, the picture changes according to the mood of the character. There is lots of variety between most of the monsters and you don't feel like fighting a different version of the same creature over and over again, even through some are just re-skinned and re-colored.
Great ! Music is awesome and the sound effects while fighting vary from each-other.
Again, great ! I love how you are a hero, but also not. You want to be evil, but you have to do good things in order to be able to do bad things. I know, right ? Mind=blown. The ending is very disappointing though, I really hoped that the opposite of what happened to happen.
Oh thank you, thank you, thank you for adding a sprint button, also thank you for making the "attack" command to be the default one. That helps with spamming ENTER in order to get out of the garbage fighting system as fast as possible.
...and now the bad...
I wish it wasn't this long honestly. Every dungeon frustrated me and I blitzed though it as fast as possible. I am so glad I chose the easy difficulty, otherwise I had to spend a lot more time planning my moves and forget where I was going by the time the fight is over.
The other and most annoying thing is how the combat works
Whenever you are in a dungeon (or outside one, doesn't matter) you will constantly get interrupted by random encounters. For some it's possible to spam the ENTER key in order to pass them fastly, but for the later ones that option goes down the drain.
Picture this: I am happily strolling down a dungeon, thinking of how to reach the end, I see the layout and think of the best path to take.... and all of a sudden.... BAM! A RANDOM ENCOUNTER. These things can take 5+ minutes. You have to concentrate, think of your best powers to use, look at your MP, HP and stats, look at the monsters' stats and so on. You get so involved it the fight that when you finish, you completely forgot where the hell you were going and forgot your plan completely.
So you set off again, walk a bit, find the way and BAM! AGAIN A RANDOM ENCOUNTER. This repeats 30 times, making you walk the same path 30 times, seeing the same thing over and over and over(x27) again. This is not fun, it completely ruined the game for me. Exploration is out of the question in this game. I cannot enjoy the look of the dungeon even, if the gameplay constantly gets interrupted by random encounters.
That is why I don't recommend the game and I am sorry I bought it (only for 31 cents, but even free I wouldn't have played it if I knew how bad it was). It's a shame really because the game does everything else fine.
