The major highlights of SPAZ came from the leveling system, combat sections and ship customization. Trying different combinations outrigging ships with acquired tech was a lot of fun and mostly trial and error. Enemy too strong I could go back to leveling up in weaker systems. Looking for better tech and with Mining for more rez (ore) rebuilding resources. Too try a devastating counterattack or experience yet another bitter defeat and go through the same motions again, oh gawd.
On the negative side the game universe is very cut copy and paste. The systems, planets, and stations lack any but the most basic description making exploration rather dry. While the factions, economy, mining are all very rudimentary and not fun to engage with. Plus the mission structure is very rinse and repeat and samey from system to system.
Plenty of options to free roam and level up and acquire tech. You are going to need all that when you face the bio zombies fleets en mass. The story is progression based though it does have that go at your own pace of feel to it. Though without the story progression the mothership don't get any of those badassery upgrades.
